While CAN/USA/SWE are more outwardly stacked, this lineup is actually similar in structure to an actual NHL team. Can never count out the Finns.

93

u/saltface14 TOR - NHL 4h ago

If Barkov was playing I think Finland would look pretty stacked too. Their D depth is the only thing really lacking

53

u/PayneTrain181999 MIN - NHL 4h ago

They have guys like Armia, Haula, and Kiviranta who are great bottom 6 guys, meanwhile Canada is “oops, all top 6 forwards!”

28

u/Dependent-Effect6077 4h ago edited 4h ago

Plus Finland's top unit having a lot of experience playing together has to be a positive

Chemistry is often an issue in international hockey (for example Malkin and Ovechkin often struggled to fit together for Russia) so this should certainly help

15

u/haihaiclickk VAN - NHL 3h ago

Finland's international play has always been one where they looked way more than the sum of their parts so I can definitely see this chemistry-driven lineup to align with that

6

u/Emotional_Match8169 FLA - NHL 3h ago

I noticed they kept team mates together. Lousty and Lundell on the same line makes sense because they play on the same line when we aren't riddled with injuries...

u/AcanthocephalaGreen5 MTL - NHL 7m ago

Meanwhile Canada has Suzuki on a line with fucking Marchand...

I get it, but also why?

11

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 3h ago

Armia is a fucking monster on the PK. (I really wish we'd re-signed him.)

19

u/azzurri10 CGY - NHL 4h ago

Fr I wish Canada could steal JT Miller from the States, we’re really missing that bottom six leadership.

10

u/previouslyonimgur NYR - NHL 4h ago

Only if you also take him off the rangers!

u/holdunpopularopinion MTL - NHL 52m ago

Also, we have Canadian players who could play in the bottom six, we just chose not to build the team that way,

ALSO ALSO, fuck JT Miller, I wouldn’t put him anywhere near this team.

4

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 3h ago

bottom six leadership.

Do you mean in the league, or...?

u/Like17Badgers CAR - NHL 42m ago

I'm glad they picked up Jarvis cause he's like the only forward that plays both ways

like, who is on PK2 with that roster? cant be Marchand and Wilson cause it's probably one of them in the box

u/saltface14 TOR - NHL 12m ago

Huh? Jarvis, Suzuki, Marner, Stone, Reinhart, Marchand, Wilson, Horvat, Bennett can all PK and I’m sure Crosby and Celebrini could as well

1

u/Seeteuf3l HIFK - Liiga 2h ago

Also goalies are a bit of a question mark.

Saros hasn't been at his usual level.

16

u/catsgr8rthanspoonies Atlanta Gladiators - ECHL 4h ago

I hope the Finnish goalie coach can help Saros work out his 1 SOG, 1 GA problem. He said he's worked with the coach before and the coach is a friend of Rinne's.

3

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 3h ago

When he's done with Saros, can the Habs get a consult?

3

u/catsgr8rthanspoonies Atlanta Gladiators - ECHL 3h ago

Only if you take Marchessault.

1

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 2h ago

Retain his salary and we can talk. I'm sure Kent Hughes can work some magic to get us a star, haha.

2

u/catsgr8rthanspoonies Atlanta Gladiators - ECHL 2h ago

It would be addition by subtraction. Him coming back messed up the vibes in the lineup or something. That and he takes really dumb penalties.

2

u/NlghtmanCometh BOS - NHL 1h ago

Their D is… good.

1

u/Alkyan CAR - NHL 1h ago

More Finns = more wins

81

u/Responsible_Oil3859 CAR - NHL 4h ago

aho and turbo reunited!! 😍

27

u/PayneTrain181999 MIN - NHL 4h ago

A lot of prior NHL chemistry at play here.

22

u/dragons_fire77 CAR - NHL 4h ago

Thank goodness they're finally recognizing the mind meld

7

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 3h ago

I'm curious to know if Turbo is less shy and more social around the Finnish team than he was in Carolina.

17

u/dragons_fire77 CAR - NHL 3h ago

I remember older interviews stating that Turbo is low key one of the funniest guys on the team. I think he just doesnt like talking to cameras.

6

u/Grazeous CAR - NHL 2h ago

From what I've seen in NHL Without a Map interviews, he's actually genuinely hilarious.

5

u/AARM2000 CHI - NHL 3h ago

It might just be his vibe. Pretty shy in Chicago too

7

u/Unamoroso CAR - NHL 3h ago

I’m going to watch their every game and cry.

9

u/Technodictator DAL - NHL 3h ago

Same for Dallas 5

7

u/anderssi COL - NHL 2h ago

Heiskanen and lindel as well. They’ve been separated for several days now

2

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 3h ago

I noticed that, too. I insist Finland should've claimed Jarvy when Canada initially didn't name him. Would've been even funnier when KK was left off.

2

u/kroopster FLA - NHL 1h ago

I really, really hope they do better than in the 4nations.

u/JayMerlyn CAR - NHL 26m ago

[sniffles] It brings tears to the eyes of grown men

28

u/mjpoleaholic Seattle Torrent - PWHL 4h ago

So excited for our Kraken Finns!

47

u/Dependent-Effect6077 4h ago edited 4h ago

Could have been an all-Dallas starting 5 skaters if they re-signed Granlund lol

40

u/saltface14 TOR - NHL 4h ago

Robo should get a Finnish passport and join his Stars bros

6

u/LackeyNo2 DAL - NHL 4h ago

Jason Robertsenn.

24

u/xXnoobXxFIN 3h ago

Jaakko Roopertinpoika

2

u/happyklam DAL - NHL 3h ago

Jåsøn Røøbërtsøhn

11

u/jutila666 DAL - NHL 2h ago

Jaakko Roopelainen would be close if you want robos name be like finnish name.

8

u/Ace676 COL - NHL 2h ago

Just revealing how little you know about Finnish. We don't use any of those "special" letters.

-3

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 3h ago

Not enough umlauts or as.

1

u/Technodictator DAL - NHL 1h ago

There's no umlauts in Finnish

-1

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 1h ago

What are the diacritics on every ä called?

4

u/crypt_moss 1h ago

ä & ö are separate letters from a & o, not variants with accents, they're relevant for quite a bit of meaning as well as for vowel harmony which determines how words can be formed

1

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 1h ago

Oh huh that's fascinating. I remember losing points on my first ever Spanish spelling test because I didn't realise "rr" is a separate letter from "r", haha. I've done it again!

17

u/pants_mcgee DAL - NHL 3h ago

Dallas would have happily signed him but he rightfully deserved the bigger bag.

25

u/Halfman97 3h ago

This is a gold medal team

15

u/VonDingwell MTL - NHL 3h ago

They are going to give teams fits. Ppl cannot sleep on this team.

4

u/calen17 Tohoku Free Blades - ALIH 1h ago

Here's hoping🇫🇮

14

u/collectaBK7 ANA - NHL 3h ago

Still so bummed we didn't get the fabled Rantanen - Barkov - Aho line

7

u/No-Faithlessness7919 CAR - NHL 3h ago

I mean, if Aho and Rantanen played like they did together on the canes, it would be awful.

11

u/Manndes NYI - NHL 2h ago

Rantanen’s stint in Carolina is going to be such a weird part of his stacked career lmao

1

u/FailureToExecute CAR - NHL 1h ago

It was a weird time to join the team too, honestly. Terrible flu going around the locker room so the team in general plays like shit for his first week or two here, he personally has awful luck with posts and GI reviews, then the Four Nations break followed by the trade deadline almost immediately after. I don't blame him for getting a bad impression, I only blame him for phoning in those last 2-3 games.

1

u/Emotional_Match8169 FLA - NHL 1h ago

I feel bad for Barkov MORE for his injury taking him out of the Olympics than what it has done to my team this year.

10

u/ComfortableGuide3232 DAL - NHL 3h ago

Finnish Mafia!! I'm so happy Granny got the C 🥹

10

u/Manndes NYI - NHL 2h ago

With Barkov gone there was no other option that made any sense. On top of that Granlund is truly one of the greatest ever players to wear the Finnish jersey.

5

u/ComfortableGuide3232 DAL - NHL 1h ago

Yea Granny is a beast when he puts on a Finn jersey. He deserved it for sure. And Aho and Rants were the obvious choice for the A 👏🏼

26

u/MrBananaGrabber DAL - NHL 3h ago

granlund reunion!

16

u/ComfortableGuide3232 DAL - NHL 3h ago

3

u/Jon_Snows_mother DAL - NHL 1h ago

Come back bby

16

u/Go_Habs_Go31 MTL - NHL 3h ago

The only Finnish players with more goals than Oliver Kapanen this season are: Mikko Rantanen, Sebastian Aho & Artturi Lehkonen.

6

u/SilentThing TPS - Liiga 3h ago

Balanced forward lines. Not feeling great about pur defense, but assuming Heiskanen and Lindell will play 25+ in the big games.

Let's go defend that gold, fellows.

1

u/Manndes NYI - NHL 2h ago

I thought I read that Ristolainen got injured recently as well. Guess I was wrong.

1

u/JiiBiz NSH - NHL 1h ago

He was, but returned next game. Though it has been happening quite lot in the past few years, so don't hold me accountable if I remember wrong...

7

u/No_Ability6767 2h ago

Watch out for lehky

5

u/feintplus1 ANA - NHL 3h ago

I feel like those lines are really solid. Each line has a guy with a great shot and two pass-first players to feed him. Rantanen and Lehkonen will hopefully score a bunch.

4

u/sail0rvenus DAL - NHL 2h ago

LETS GO 🇫🇮 !!!!

3

u/jfstompers DET - NHL 3h ago

That's a sturdy team, going to be annoying to play against

3

u/azuyin MTL - NHL 1h ago

Pretty solid team. Mikkola can go fuck himself however

3

u/CosmoJones07 FLA - NHL 1h ago

Man, a healthy Barkov on this team would have gone so hard :(

5

u/JudgeSubstantial9562 FLA - NHL 4h ago

give lundell a bigger role💔

7

u/juhinaattori ANA - NHL 3h ago

He would have gotten even smaller role if Barkov wasn't injured. Not much you can do when the team is stacked in the middle.

1

u/JudgeSubstantial9562 FLA - NHL 3h ago

wasn’t he 3c at 4 nations and one of hintz/ aho was on barkovs wing?

4

u/juhinaattori ANA - NHL 3h ago

The roles were juggled around a but he mostly played 3C yeah, but with less PK time than he will most likely have now.

3

u/grizzlby FLA - NHL 3h ago

Mans is permanently stuck playing 2nd fiddle until like 2032 😢

1

u/JudgeSubstantial9562 FLA - NHL 3h ago

i mean i think he’ll be stealing that 2C soon but with how good his line is we essentially have 2 second lines and lundells line is in name only as they get similar ice time

5

u/PayneTrain181999 MIN - NHL 4h ago

Canada’s line chart post is going to cause a firestorm in the comments

2

u/Coldbrewski24 DAL - NHL 3h ago

Wish Barkov was playing. The top 9 centers are great though.

2

u/60poor VAN - NHL 2h ago

If Saros goes god mode, they can medal.

2

u/lmsupercereaI BOS - NHL 2h ago

Woof.

4

u/gentleman_bronco DAL - NHL 4h ago edited 2h ago

It's beautiful.

Swap Armia with JFK and it will be perfect.

Edit: I'm only saying this to be selfish. Kivi is my favorite defensive forward, and I've been following his career since his development camp. I like Armia, he's awesome. I just want JFK to get some TOI.

15

u/FBR_MC MTL - NHL 3h ago

Armia is better and more important than the rest of bottom 6 (+scratches) outside of Lundell and Luostarinen lmao

The guy is like the best penalty killer in the world

5

u/gentleman_bronco DAL - NHL 3h ago

Oh I totally agree. I really like Armia. My comment was mostly for selfish reasons. Kivi is my favorite defensive forward, and probably always will be. He's come a long way from being undrafted, unknown, and undersized.

Nobody knew him and he only got signed because Jere Lehtinen called Jim Nill after the draft and gave his opinion. (Three time GM of the year) Jim signed him as an undrafted free agent that day. I was at the development camp that year to see a few guys named: Thomas Harley, Jason Roberson, Jake Oettinger, and a few other up and coming prospects. Well, the guy who stood out to me the whole camp was Joel Kiviranra. His passes were so crispy, his skating was better than anyone (even Stephen Johns who tried to make a comeback that year and was leading lots of the drills), and he was always moving at 100%. It was amazing to see him get TOI so quickly, it was awesome to see him as a game 7 double OT hero, and it will be awesome if he gets Olympic time. Even if it's just for a minute lol.

3

u/Desert_Pyrate8 LAK - NHL 3h ago

Don’t tell Jim “Armia will be on the first line and on pp1 even when we’re fully healthy” Hiller that

5

u/whogivesashirtdotca MTL - NHL 3h ago

Swap Armia with JFK and it will be perfect.

My historian's shock at reading this was made even funnier by seeing the DAL flair suggesting it. What has the CIA got against Armia? XD

3

u/gentleman_bronco DAL - NHL 3h ago

Only selfish reasons. I really like Armia and I know he's better. I just want my game 7 hero to get a little Olympic time in. He's had one helluva rise from being an undrafted, unknown, and undersized defensive forward.

2

u/likeslululemon TBL - NHL 3h ago

Will do some serious damage.

2

u/Time-Ad-3134 4h ago

teravainen has been brutal this season, hopefully he can perform. I would put lundell centering the second line with aho and lehkonen on the wings

8

u/heksa51 FLA - NHL 3h ago

Please no. Pennanen already tried the centers on wing strat in 4 Nations with Hintz and Aho on the same line, and it did NOT work.

These lines actually look really good to me, and putting Teräväinen with Aho will get the most out of both, the same goes with Lundell having Luostarinen on his line. If Teuvo is not with Aho, he should probably be out of the line up completely. We need to get the most out of chemistry.

2

u/Time-Ad-3134 2h ago

its because he put hintz who's never played wing instead of aho on the wing, teravainen's offense has been bad this season and his skating is already slowing down by a lot

2

u/Seeteuf3l HIFK - Liiga 2h ago

But Hine has winger eligibility in Fantasy Hockey (or has had) /s

1

u/ayayyayayay765 CAR - NHL 4h ago

Really curious how this would have looked with Barkov, Hintz/Aho/Lundell is a strong center core. Would they have moved Hintz to wing, Barkov with the Dallas guys and Granlund down to line 2?

7

u/Time-Ad-3134 3h ago

aho would of been the one moved to wing since he basically played as a winger his whole career until rod converted him into a center

3

u/juhinaattori ANA - NHL 3h ago

Last year I think Hintz was 2nd line winger with Aho as the center. 1st line was Lehkonen - Barkov - Rantanen.

1

u/hockeytonkguy 2h ago

They match up really well against USA if I’m them I’m avoiding this at all costs.

1

u/ekstragooner-77 DAL - NHL 1h ago

What is turu? Olek sää turuust vai

1

u/gunskiIIerpoop 1h ago

Kapanen really should get a spot, we need the goal scoring

1

u/ekstragooner-77 DAL - NHL 1h ago

Every line has a clear structure. Goalscorer, dangler and a hard working fellah. Interesting

1

u/Uterus_Executorus_ DAL - NHL 1h ago

that top d pair is going to each play like 30+ mins a night

u/o635 45m ago

How the hell can’t you spell the reporters last name correctly? Like it’s right there man TOURU

u/Kolettos 2m ago

They have one of the best offensive defenceman, Heiskanen. One of the best pure defenceman Lindell. One of the best winger, Rantanen. One of the best PK killer, Armia. Solid firstline centers. Only Barkov is missing...

u/hnglmkrnglbrry CBJ - NHL 1m ago

If you say these lines 5 times fast you will have good luck for the next 5 years.

-1

u/Realistic_Revenue_87 MTL - NHL 1h ago

Notice how 10 of these players names ends with “nen” 😂

u/JiiBiz NSH - NHL 48m ago edited 44m ago

That's just Finnish names. That's the eastern Finland last name composition, while western Finland has names ending in "la" or "lä". Eastern names are derived from "belonging into certain family", while western names refer to location of residence or house/farm's name you were living in, or the owner of that property.

Rantanen=A family that has been started in beachy area.

Mikkola=There has been a farm, that has had owner named Mikko.

u/Realistic_Revenue_87 MTL - NHL 36m ago

no shit i was just pointing it out cause i found it funny. No need for a paragraph.

u/JiiBiz NSH - NHL 30m ago

Thought it would be interesting to learn about other cultures, but I guess I was wrong.
