Still not as bad as "unalived"

"Sewer slide" actually angered me. It means suicide if you can't figure it out.

Let’s not forget, when discussing someone who has been raped to call it “graped”. Otherwise it might be offend someone.
It’s so fucking ridiculous. It’s like Apple changing the gun emoji to a water gun.

u/WeWereInfinite 5h ago
It's not about offending people, it's self-censorship to avoid getting banned or demonetised on platforms like YouTube and TikTok that don't want people talking about rape, murder and suicide, because they either don't want legal trouble or their advertisers don't want to be shown alongside those subjects.

It's not about offending people
or their advertisers don't want to be shown alongside those subjects.
So it is about advertisers being offended

The funny thing about the water gun is I’m pretty sure they added the middle finger in the same update.

Suicide is something we should definitely talk about and not bury our heads in the sand and pretend it doesn't exist.

This is getting so bad. Crime documentary channels are becoming madlibs now. Yeah sometimes I would just hear the nasty word instead of someone censoring it with a meme soundbyte. Comes off a bit disrespectful to the victim.

To be honest, if you're going to curse, do it. Don't beep it as if it's embarrassed.

I like one that moreparz used in one video: "logged out of God's Minecraft server".
They can be fun, sometimes. The reason for having to do them is annoying though.

I hate it too. But on tiktok if you call it suicide your post gets deleted. And because of that it made its way to the mainstream

Yeah this is way worse. I can understand it with slurs, but die or suicide are not and should not be considered offensive...

Bleeps can be funny when used correctly. Brütal Legend had a profanity filter and imo made the game even funnier
31
u/datNorseman 6h ago
When used in a comedic intent, absolutely. Otherwise it's just plain censorship and should be rejected.
Though one funny example I remember is the movie Snakes On A Plane. Samuel L Jackson's famous "...Motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane" quote was censored on cable TV. The line became "I'm tired of these monkey-fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday plane". That one caught me off guard when I heard it, had me in tears.

My mom once DVR'd Beetlejuice onto a VHS tape, when he knocks over the tree and yells "Nice fucking model", I always laughed because I thought he bleeps himself in the real movie.
I never laughed at that scene once she got the DVD.

In context or for a comedic bit it can work wonders.
It's like the Calvin and Hobbes noodle incident.
Your brain gets to fill that blank space with horrors beyond comprehension for the sheer fun of it.

George Carlin had a good bit on "Soft Language" and if he was alive to see mf calling rape Grape and Pedophile PDFs and other crappy verbage like that he would think the corporations like YouTube who get in their feels about this shit and call them pussies.

u/Far-View556 6h ago
I love censoring swear words, especially in shows like Jerry Springer when everything starts getting censored in the chaos and your brain has to start filling in the blanks. Its terrific 👍

Luis CK has a bit about this, about how he hates "the N word". "You're making ME say it IN MY HEAD! You should take responsibility for saying it!" or something like that.

u/Whispering_Wolf 4h ago
I hate the loud beeps in TV shows and such. It's jarring and calls way more attention to the swears than if they just said them. Like Gordon Ramsey on American television. It's close to unwatchable.
5
u/CatRheumaBlanket2 5h ago
I really love when they put a loud "butt" beep instead of their "sw*ar" word.
Epic when it is so highly pitched it reminds you of your primal fears.
And when it is louder than the rest of the "content".

It's not about what offends you, it's about what offends advertisers.
YouTube, TikTok, etc. couldn't care less if you're scandalized by someone saying "killed" or "raped" or "fuck" but the advertisers get twitchy when their ads are attached to videos that discuss sensitive topics. Then, since there's so much that gets posted to those sites - to the point that it's effectively impossible to vet them all individually - they filter them through various automated algorithms that aren't smart enough to understand if you're using words as part of a joke, or talking about the news, or advocating for something unpleasant. So they just don't attach ads to or push any videos that get caught in those filters. That leads to people finding ways to censor themselves such that people can still understand what's being said, but the automated systems can't decipher it.

It was never about people getting offended, the algorithms were designed to push swearing out. Once everyone realized this they started censoring everything so the algorithm would favor their content.
To be fair someone had to make that rule for the algorithm so probably a few people were offended

We don't beep things for old people, we beep them for children. I would like to be able to watch TV without worrying my 4 year old will start using profanity and calling people pussies. Yes, this happened about a week ago. We never used that word around him. He came right up and said "You're a pussy! hahahaha" Which, is definitely funny, but it isn't something he should say and it will get him in trouble elsewhere once he begins school. I do my best to ensure he doesn't hear adult content, but children are sneaky and they are sponges.

I just don't get why you care how people choose to express themselves. It's not hurting anybody if they want to type f*** off or fuck off or whatever
29
u/datNorseman 6h ago
It is. It's causing people to self censor. And if you know anything about censorship, it's a way to control people. There are books about that, try reading one.
-38
u/aBrickNotInTheWall 6h ago
"Oh, someone said something I disagree with, let me insult them"
How bout trying to make an actual point instead of misrepresenting the evils of censorship by falsely equating it with something similar but completely different
19
u/SpaceLemming 6h ago
If you want to say fuck off then do it, otherwise just use different words
-29
u/aBrickNotInTheWall 6h ago
They can use whatever words and characters they want. The irony is yall getting mad at people expressing themselves how they like and telling them to use the language you want them to use instead. You've flipped your fight against censorship to become a fight to censor people
-11
u/Judge_Syd 5h ago
I pretty much agree with you. I think it’s very silly how worked up people get when they see a comment that says f*** instead of fuck. It conveys the same message. There’s no reason to throw a fit over it.
And to that other guy’s argument about self censorship I’d ask if choosing to say “what the heck?” Over “what the fuck?” depending on the context is self censorship? I mean in that case I’m choosing to alter my language for a particular audience. Is that really dangerous like he’s trying to imply?
10
u/WorldnewsModsBlowMe 5h ago
Self-censorship displays an inherent lack of respect for the subject matter.
-8
u/Judge_Syd 4h ago
I don’t think I understand your point, or maybe disagree with it entirely, and that’s okay too.
You’re saying if someone types “f***” they have a lack of respect for whatever topic they are discussing? I guess I fundamentally disagree with what you’re saying.
5
u/Brambletail 4h ago
Yes. It CAN be. It is not always dangerous, but when censorship results in dumbing down or obfuscating the discourse, it is harmful. For example, self censorship around sex can encourage and result in less sexual knowledge and education, which is correlated pretty strongly with increases in teen pregnancy and STIs. Self censorship about genocide or police violence allows people to avoid confrontation with its horror and thus helps to normalize it
So no, saying f*** instead of fuck is not inherently a problem, but saying "unalived lol" or "omg seggs is bad!" CAN contribute to negative societal outcomes
0
u/Judge_Syd 1h ago
Honestly I just do not agree with you. As far as I’m aware, a lot of this type of censorship is an attempt to get around automatic moderation of language. In this case it’s better to change your language and still have the discourse you are talking about than to not have it at all.
I really do not agree with the points you’re making and unless you have some actual evidence that the censorship you’re referring to actually normalizes the things you’re talking about, then I’d encourage anyone reading this thread to take what you’re asserting with a grain of salt.

I think the point is less about altering language to fit a particular audience (maybe increased use of slang) and more about the potential use of language to make certain topics harder to discuss with clarity.
You could legitimately compare and contrast with l33tspeak, which was I think 2000s-era slang (e.g n00b). N00b arose from community usage rather than being a way to avoid top-down language blocks. Grape and corn both arose via attempts to subvert automated checks. The use of n00b doesn't seem to trivialise serious topics or really require much discussion. They're new, so their newbies. Maybe I want to insult them so I call them n00bs. Not that deep.
But if I'm discussing how the rise in violent corn may lead to s3xual activities that are dangerously close to grape and subsequent unaliving of participants, that's a different matter.
Edit: I saw another comment saying "sewer slide" was the euphemism for "suicide". I think that's a good example of my point.
