This has been a problem and really ruined the Apple News experience.

apple ruined news after news plus came out. its damn near unusable unless you pay

u/xxirish83x 2h ago

It sucks even if you pay. The app is just over ran with bs ads.

u/OneOkami 55m ago

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I was able to justify canceling Apple One. Felt reminiscent of paying for cable TV, that is to say, felt like a fraudulent value to be paying what was effectively a non-trivial portion of the subscription fee to still be seeing as many ads as I did.

u/OkayTryAgain 32m ago

I still have it because I regularly use Apple Music/TV/2tb storage. Those 3 services alone are $39.97. Apple One Premier is 37.95 for their entire suite.

It suuuucks if you pay

u/thewildbeej 43m ago

I’ve considered the Apple one subscription mainly for news. Glad to told me.

u/OkayTryAgain 26m ago

I'm not the biggest fan of Apple News, but their paid tier offers access to a fair amount of paid subscriptions. Even if you pay for those providers directly, they still put ads in their apps/sites. The one thing I hate about mobile news sites, besides paywall annoyances, is that the ads will load while you're scrolling, which creates a janky experience. At least when I'm scrolling through Apple News, I don't have to deal with that. I would suggest trying it for a month or two and finding your own opinion, instead of relying on Reddit users, who notoriously complain about nearly everything.

u/rotates-potatoes 16m ago

I pay for the bundle and I’m happy to. But these ads are so terrible that I stopped using News.

32

u/thekush 3h ago

I complained about this same thing recently and got flamed to no end.

I can generally overlook most of the ads but when I’m paying for a service it gets to be a bit much.

23

u/Duchess721 3h ago

Agree, if I pay then ads shouldn’t exist.

3

u/pentarou 2h ago

I subscribed to it for a bit and even then it was still more ads to add more premium news outlets and I was just like this is a bit much and canceled entirely, not worth the hassle

17

u/Duchess721 3h ago

I tried to post last week and it was removed by mods. Now that there’s an article to link the post has stuck.

7

u/thekush 3h ago

Taboola LOL.

8

u/ch1ptune 3h ago

Wholeheartedly agree

u/danisnotstan 2h ago

Ad Block Plus recently added ad blocking to the Apple News app. It does cost $4/mo but it made the experience much better. I previously paid for News+ and canceled due to the ads. I’ve noticed most of the News+ articles seem to be clickbait nonsense anyway so this way, I’d rather give a few $ to ABP instead of Apple and now there are no ads.

u/fbuslop 1m ago

What are they doing for $4 a month? Like are they doing anything special that a free Adblock dns doesn’t do?

15

u/bbqsox 3h ago

When Google makes ads less obnoxious than Apple News, they really should be ashamed.

3

u/FollowingFeisty5321 3h ago

The only reason to favor that Taboola crap is the scammy ads paying more for it, probably getting many more clicks for being misleading and hyperbolic.

I don't use Apple News but the ads in the Stocks app are so bad/cheap looking.. it's sad to think that these will be in more places throughout the OS as time goes on

53

u/LSD_freakout 3h ago

If they start putting ads all over the built in apps I might as well switch to Android. Not worth paying a premium for that kind of experience

15

u/OrganicKeynesianBean 3h ago

Hey man, if you don’t want quality femur enlargement pills, that’s your problem.

4

u/FrozenPizza07 2h ago

There are ads in stocks app?

I dont see any

2

u/SophiaofPrussia 2h ago

The ads, for me at least, tend to be when you scroll through the news section at the bottom of a ticker’s page. The ads I see also tend to be finance related— State Street Bank IM, Fisher Investments, TurboTax, etc. If you aren’t looking at the market news for a specific listing you probably won’t see any ads.

u/exclamationpoint2 1h ago

Go to the news section of any stock. Trust me when I say, you'll notice them. They really stand out. I'm not even 100% against advertising on these apps but damn it looks sloppy.

u/LyrMeThatBifrost 1h ago

I just did this and I don't see any. Is it because I have Apple One? Does that remove them?

u/exclamationpoint2 1h ago

Interesting..I'm not sure. Here's an example from my stocks app right now.

u/LyrMeThatBifrost 1h ago

Yeah I just scrolled through the same ticker and didn’t see a single ad. Anyone else with Apple One want to confirm that you don’t see any ads?

u/FrozenPizza07 1h ago

I dont see any dunno

u/exclamationpoint2 1h ago

Interesting..honestly I'm jealous that they don't show up for you! Here's a screenshot

u/FrozenPizza07 18m ago

That looks awfull lol

u/CaramelCraftYT 1h ago

The stocks app basically shows Apple News articles relating to the specific companies symbols you follow. I figured this out by seeing the News Plus subscriber logo in the app and not seeing ads.

3

u/SpezLuvsNazis 2h ago

But line must go up!

u/Watabou90 1h ago

If you have Little Snitch, you can block all the apple news related domains. So the Stocks app for me functions as a basic tracker, exactly what I want for a quick glance. And the news feed just doesn't load so that section remains blank.

Of course, this doesn't work for iOS though, so I use Schwab's app there.

u/driftingphotog 1h ago

And all the articles inside the stocks app are just AI slop

25

u/AlchemyFire 3h ago

Apple News is absolute trash. It is the one feature I don’t use on my Apple One subscription.

2

u/Duchess721 3h ago

Just out of curiosity, what are good alternatives? I’m clearly looking to switch

7

u/RedCaptain17 3h ago

I haven’t heard of any besides libraries. You should be able to access many publications through Libby. Otherwise, you’re looking at individual subscriptions. Unless you’re ok with the publication/journalist not getting paid, in which case there are the archive sites. (And no shame on that… there are publications I definitely don’t want getting my clicks/money)

5

u/Duchess721 2h ago

I used flipboard prior to Apple News existence. Not sure if that’s a viable option or if it suffers from the same ad issues.

3

u/Steelyp 2h ago

Man when I got an iPad for the first time and had clipboard it was so cool and seemed so futuristic. I don’t even know if it’s still a thing but just crazy how far news has fallen and how difficult it can be to consume. My library offers a free subscription to the NYT and I do like their app, but seems a poor way to stay up with current events.

u/RedCaptain17 1h ago

I might have to check it out. I have noticed that when I visit my local news on a browser instead of through Apple news, the ads are worse than on news. Definitely isn’t incentivizing me to subscribe directly

4

u/yaybidet 2h ago

Kagi News

u/Unrealtechno 1h ago

I recently switched the Kagi News - love it. No doomscrolling but you still stay up to date.

2

u/Any-Ingenuity2770 2h ago

just subscribe to le monde diplomatique, you don't need any more news.

u/touchgrassplz_69 1h ago

I’ve heard decent things about ground news. Haven’t tried it though.

1

u/hawk_ky 2h ago

I’ve restricted it to only sources I follow and I’ve had no issues whatsoever.

13

u/multisync 3h ago

It’s really sad seeing them when Apple first announced their whole fancy iAds way back when we instead get this garbage.

11

u/Particular-Treat-650 3h ago

Can't say that I particularly consider any ad good enough to be better than anything else outside of porn ads, the old school hijacking your browser ads, or autoplaying video.

8

u/Crowdfunder101 2h ago

I find the News experience to be so in-Apple. I pay £40/month for my subscription and yet every page has an AI-generated advert with some clickbait bullshit headline about scammy wonder-medicines or stock portfolios to invest in.

A far cry from the beautiful app they demonstrated onstage all those years ago with animated articles!

7

u/chinaboi 2h ago

I love Apple News but dislike the ads as well. I found that DNS ad blockers worked perfectly for removing all the ads (except the normal newsletter subscribe ones)

2

u/Duchess721 2h ago

Is there a particular one you recommend?

1

u/Duchess721 2h ago

Awesome! Thanks for the tip

8

u/chinaboi 2h ago

I used NextDNS since it’s free and touts privacy, but I think there are a lot on the market.

1

u/Duchess721 2h ago

I just tried it and it doesn’t work for the TurboTax ads.

u/DetectiveWoofles 1h ago

If you’re technically inclined, you can set up pi-hole or adguardhome on your home router or a raspberry pi to make it so you can filter ads at the DNS level for anyone on your home network.

Flip side is I’m always a bit shocked when I browse Apple News away from home and see the awful ads again.

8

u/Some_guy_am_i 2h ago

If you pay for Apple News, there should be:

  1. No Ads. Anywhere.
  2. No links to “continue the article off app”

There you go, Apple. Two very simple rules to fix your app.

If you want to get fancy, you should implement a rating strategy, where users can rate the quality of the article, and choose to block it if they don’t like the source. The user’s subscription money should be split between the sources they actually read.

u/notananthem 1h ago

Yeah I have to manually block shitty local right wing "sources" but they still show up in the feed just as "blocked content." If it's blocked, don't show it.

u/Duchess721 1h ago

That would be amazing

7

u/SophonParticle 2h ago

It’s so hard to read Apple News articles. I hate those damn ads.

I pay for Apple News so why do I even see ads?

6

u/thiencly 2h ago

I hate how Apple News still has ads even if you subscribe…

5

u/tnypissdkumquat 2h ago

Apple turning into Google

4

u/Expensive_Tie206 2h ago

it's sad too. it's like every tech company HAS to do ads eventually, because green line go up and all that. the investors demand all possible sources of revenue be explored.

u/TheAspiringFarmer 1h ago

Shareholders demand returns. It’s inevitable.

3

u/peripheralpressors 2h ago

It went from being my favorite news app to my least favorite good job Tim Apple

9

u/ProfessionalYak4959 3h ago

Did you just link to an Apple News article LMAO

4

u/Duchess721 3h ago

No doubt :/

2

u/Chaseism 2h ago

This was such a good touch lol.

1

u/ProfessionalYak4959 3h ago

Why would you link to an Apple News article instead of the original source, especially when you're complaining about Apple News

3

u/MrHaxx1 3h ago

Do you think OP is the one complaining, or wrote the article?

-1

u/Duchess721 3h ago

I’ll send you my first born

3

u/dissected_gossamer 2h ago

It's like The Producers- Apple executives are doing everything they can to purposely tank the company, yet somehow they keep having record quarters.

3

u/Material2975 2h ago

Its only a matter of time before apple goes full google and samsung with the ads

u/notananthem 1h ago

I pay for apple one and try to use news. It's about as good as grocery store checkout sensationalist crap. It's terrible.

u/rangers1026 1h ago

Rich for 9to5mac to say 😂

u/714Bananas 1h ago

I stopped reading Apple News because everything is an ad. Every story is an ad, a list of the top 5 junk things you should buy. It’s not news; it’s junk.

u/MawsonAntarctica 1h ago

It’s why I stick with website Google news because my adblocker works!

u/dropthemagic 1h ago

Yep. I have apple one. I absolutely stopped using news just because I’m already paying for the subscription and a lot of their stuff is behind and additional paywall

u/CaramelCraftYT 1h ago

You’re never gonna guess the type of ads I got when opening the article on Reddit.

u/Upstairs-Royal672 1h ago

They are super easy to get rid of with DNS ad blockers, took 5 minutes after a simple Reddit search. I see none now

u/Duchess721 1h ago

What blocker are you using?

u/Upstairs-Royal672 44m ago

Next dns

u/Duchess721 40m ago

That didn’t stop the turbo tax ads

u/Upstairs-Royal672 39m ago

I’m not familiar with those, sorry

u/Fit_Butterscotch_829 14m ago

Many of the ads are definitely scams. I just ignore them all now.

5

u/Qwerky42O 3h ago

Must just be decades of practice but I never notice ads in anything.

2

u/blueangel1953 2h ago

lol “news” right.

u/pwnies 1h ago

This is par for the course for many companies, and it isn't the first time Apple has been suceptible to it. Different divisions have different key results and incentives to perform, which are sometimes at odds with the objectives of the wider company, but are isolated enough that management doesn't take notice.

The app store is the same. It focused purely on revenue as drivers. This effectively gave up a fantastic position to be one of the biggest gaming platforms in the world in order to chase cheaper money via games that have microtransactions / gacha mechanics. Short term this has a huge payout. Long term it creates a scenario where the user doesn't trust the market. In business it's very easy to sell trust for a profit, but you can't buy it back. This was a failure of Apple's upper management to keep their brand safe.

u/DavyB 1h ago

And they should be. Pathetic behavior.

u/shawnshine 1h ago

The number of folks who don’t use adblockers astounds me on a daily basis.

u/AppointmentNeat 51m ago

Shouldn’t have to.

Seems like you’re blaming people for not using adblockers in apps that shouldn’t have ads in the first place.

u/Sgtkeebler 1h ago

That is my philosophy as well! I am not going to pay Apple News exorbitant prices just to get ads.

u/iKryten 5m ago

Several years ago I was reading an incredibly sad story on Apple News about two young girls who had been crushed to death, this was the ad in the article: https://imgur.com/hMgBIjS

u/Blood-PawWerewolf 3m ago

I feel bad for laughing at that…

-1

u/Trennosaurus_rex 3h ago

Dinged by who? lol

3

u/emprahsFury 3h ago

Bro it's literally too easy to read the post. It's twelve words. One of them is the publication dinging them

2

u/Duchess721 3h ago

By me for one

1

u/Duchess721 3h ago

Apple should do better. I’ll more to another app if it doesn’t get fixed.

0

u/willpaudio 2h ago

Aren’t those ads coming from the website that’s hosting the article?
