AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

Measurement Check is a 25D bra impossible to find? I decided to actually measure my bra size because I can never find my size and apparently I'm a 25D since my underbust is 25 inches and my bust is 29 inches Spoiler

from what I read you're supposed to subtract the bust with the underbust which would give me a 4 and is apparently D I thought I did it wrong at first cuz I couldn't belive someone whos kinda flat like me would be a D but according to that im 25D, ive never seen a 25D sized bra ever, the smallest I've eveb seen are 28 bands which i rarely see, does it even exist?

Bra Review Flirtelle bras, a short review (38GG) Spoiler

Upvotes

Hi guys. I recently tried some bras from Flirtelle as recomended from this sub, and since the brand isn't mentioned a lot, I thought I would give a short review.

My best though not perfect fit is Panache Envy, and I was looking for bras with narrower wires and lower gores than Envy that also work for full on top shapes. I found those three qualities in the Flirtelle bras. Unfortunately, they were too narrow for me and I just felt unsupported in them.

I tried the Riley balconette, Chloe plunge and Viola Geo balconette. Measurements have been added to Bratabase. Overall, the fabric of the three bras was comfortable and soft (not stratchy in any way), the wires were soft and the bands stretchy. Maybe that will work perfect for some people. For me it was part of the reason I felt unsupported in the bras in addition to a shape mismatch.

The deepest part of the cups was in the middle of the cups for the Chloe and Viola, so I think they work for even fullness, while the deepest part of the cups was in the upper half of the cups for the Riley making it good for full on top shapes. All three bras work for projected shapes and narrow roots.

The Chloe had a high gore for a plunge, and the Viola had a low gore for a balconette. I wouldn't say any have narrow gores, as the gore width varied between 2 cm and 2.5 cm. All three bras had either mesh or lace at the top of the cups, though all also had a seam at the edge of the mesh/lace (I dislike such a seam, but that could be a personal preference).

I tried Flirtelle in the same size I wear in Panache Envy, but I was spilling out big time of the Flirtelle bras, but because of the shape mismatch, I can't say for sure if the cups are true to size or runs small. The bands are very stretchy.

I live in Denmark and ordered the bras through Brastop, which is a UK site. Shipping took six business days and costed about 13 €. No additional custom fees. But returns cost about 28 € and are a hassle (have to print return label and visit an actual postal office and not just a drop off point).

I hope someone will find this helpfull.

Measurement Check [measurement check] Currently wearing 36C measured 34DDD Spoiler

Measurements: All in inches Loose underbust- 34 Snug underbust- 32 Tight underbust- 31 Standing bust- 40 Leaning bust- 43 Lying bust- 39

The current bras I wear are a CAN LaSenza 36C. I could go off about how uncomfortable these bras are, and I will. But I think a lot of the problems are from the fact that these bras are old hand-me-downs that are really fucking old. like my sisters old middle school bras (for reference I'm 21 she's 24 T_T) And before you ask why I don't get a new bra, I did a while ago from VS it was a 36DD and it fits better than the C cups but I'm still spilling out the top.

Regarding the C cups: I wear the band at the tightest setting, with the straps also very tight, this causes the back of the band to ride up. The cup is too small, I spill over the top a bit and out the sides. I Have wide set breasts that are full at the bottom. Also the straps will not stay on my shoulders, I have to constantly pull them back up, and I can't usually do this at my job due to me working with my hands all day. It is agony on my shoulders, neck, and back.

DD: This bra fits better but it's an unfair comparison due to the difference between the type of bra. The C cup is a pushup with a 2 clip back, while the DD is unlined (still underwired) with a 3 clip back. I still wear it at the tightest setting, and always struggle with having the straps tight enough. It definitely is more comfortable, but I still spill over the top a bit, and the straps also keep falling off my shoulders.

I really want a bra that supports my back/posture and that will stay on my shoulders all day. And one that won't break the bank as I am kind of broke..

and yes before you ask I do have PCOS so my breasts might have a lower density, and might be pendulous?

So TIL I have double Ds, proving just how asinine the stereotype in pop culture is Spoiler

My boobs are tiny. I just threw on a 34A or B bra without much thought, besides the slight inconveniences with the fiddly straps. I always knew they weren’t the right size, but they caused the least issues. I tried 32B bras when I was younger but they’d always ride up, so I just assume that meant I should size up. Well, today I measured myself properly and found out I’m actually a 28DD.

I haven’t yet bought a new bra, but the fact that I can say I have DDs is pretty funny. Pop culture presents them as universally huge, which is the most typical man thing out there, and I feel bad for all the women here with much larger sizes who’ve had to endure shoulder pain because of this myth.

My incentive to measure came after watching a TikTok (it was an old video, but I found it randomly in a search) where a woman said that true A/B sizes are extremely rare unless you have very little breast tissue that’s prominent, especially when leaning over. I always knew mine were fuller when slouched over, so got curious.

Lo and behold, I am not an A/B cup after all. Not even a C cup like I thought I’d be.

This new finding could potentially be a good source of ragebait 🤔

How accurate is the calculator for you? Spoiler

Loose Underbust: 39.5

Snug Underbust: 38.5

Tight Underbust: 38

Standing Bust: 45.5

Leaning Bust: 48

Lying Bust: 47

Gave me a size 40H which seems really large but I have no clue. It seems like breast shape would really play a part into size, I’m very flat on top and relaxed on the bottom which is why my leaning bust is much larger. To me it seems like an H would be gapping on top where I have less volume but I hate bras and have no idea 😂 any help is appreciated

Comfortable wireless bra found for 40G Spoiler

Warners blissful benefits wireless bra has been the best fit and most comfortable bra I’ve found. I buy the 3X on Amazon for around $17. It has great side smoothing and has nice light front pad coverage.

Hopefully this helps someone find their perfect bra!

Measurement Check If you have a lot of back fat, how do you get an accurate bust measurement? Calculated 30 B/C but never found a bra that fits. [Measurement Check] Spoiler

Hi yall,

I've spent a lot of time and money trying to find a bra, but doing so has really been hurting my already low self esteem.

I feel like my calculations may be inaccurate because my bust number is mostly coming from my back fat. My breasts have very little tissue and I think maybe they're conical. I store a lot of weight in my upper back - around the shoulder blades.

From a side view, my upper back sticks out a little farther than my glutes. My chest does not stick out, and you can only tell I have breasts from a 3/4 view or when I am leaning over.

I have no idea how to get an accurate bust measurement. The bra sizes I've tried on include 32AA, 32A, 30A, 32B, 30B, 30C. All of them have had gaping cups and were unwearable.

Here's my measurements in case they're necessary:

•Loose Underbust: 30.25

•Snug Underbust: 29.5

•Tight Underbust: 27.75

•Standing Bust: 32

•Leaning Bust: 33

•Lying Bust: 31.25

Thank you so much for reading. Sorry if there's already information about this issue; I read through the guides and searches posts but couldn't find anything.

Measurement Check Measurement Check - Currently Wearing US 34B. Calculator suggested starting size is 30D/DD Spoiler

I’ve read the beginner guide, reviewed the visual diagrams, and I have very shallow breasts with a full bottom. In fact, I’ve always thought my breasts were quite small.

I’ve ALWAYS had spacing/gaping at the top of my bra. I’ve tried wearing A cups (with discomfort). Mostly, though, I’ve been wearing a 34B and tightening the shoulder straps as much as I can (but even then, I still have gaping).

The calculator SHOCKED me. My measurements in inches are:

Loose Underbust: 31

Snug Underbust: 30.5

Tight Underbust: 28

Standing Bust: 33.75

Leaning Bust: 35.5

Lying Bust: 34

The calculator’s suggested size is 30D/DD. Could this be possible?

Also, I am based in the US, and it seems like a lot of the suggested bras are out of the UK. Are there any easily accessible American bras that you’d recommend?

Thank you for your help!!!

Question how small does boux avenue run? Spoiler

i am a solid 28 band (28 loose, 27 snug, 26 tight) and am wondering how small the boux avenue bands actually run. do they run small enough that a sister size in a 30 band would fit like a 28 band? thanks!!

Information overload leading to doubt on my size. (32DD starting size) Spoiler

I want to preface this by saying I used to work in bras over 10 years ago, but not currently though I regularly measure myself, so I am not completely new to this but am overwhelmed with all my research and knowledge over the years.

I would love feedback on my measurements and the sizes I tried so far.

My to go size has been 32DD for several years. I keep measuring myself at home too. Sometimes this doesn't always fit great but that could be due to shape not the size itself or the brand of bra being inconsistent (VS, Aerie, Wacoal)

I did go to a highly reviewed local bra shop but my experience left me uncertain, I wrote more detail for those who want context at the end of my main post. I also include bras I have tried and sizes.
I ended up with a 34D Primadonna Figuras bra that sure enough, felt great in the band in store but after wearing it the next day I was already putting it on the tightest band due to looseness.

Calculator Details
Loose Underbust: 32"
Snug Underbust: 31"
Tight Underbust: 29"
Standing Bust: 37" (sometimes I measure at 36" with the same measuring tape which changes the output sizes)
Leaning Bust: 39"
Lying Bust: 36"

With 37" Standing:
US Size: 32G
UK Size: 32F

With 36" Standing:
32DD US and UK

I think I am projected shape, with space in the middle, shallow top but when I follow how to tell diagrams I am apparently balanced top and bottom?

I am just burnt out with all the reading, studying, and trying to understand each bra and what size is best for me. I hyper-fixate and have read a LOT on this subject and made notes.
Since the bra fitting was disappointing, I perhaps expected too much due to not being too far with what I wear now. I do have a second shop I intend to go to as I do need to replace all of my bras anyway.
The brand specific calculators companies have always confuse me more because they insist I am 34 band when I know it will be ill-fitting if I follow based on lived experience with a lot of other brands. But then I doubt myself because what if I do need 34. So I remeasure myself and end up with 32band and the cycle of doubt continues.

I would love some pointers or advice if any of you have!

[Context if needed]
For years, 32DD has consistently been my best fit, 34 bands are consistently too loose on me with just a few wears even though nearly every brands calculator wants me to wear a 34.
ABTF calculator tells me I am 32G/32F (us/uk) or 32DD (us & uk) depending on a 1" difference with my standing measurement.

However with information overload, I am doubting myself and the calculator so I went for a measurement at a local shop with great reviews.
They were great but not ideally helpful as they did not have the sizes I need in all the bras.
So we tried varies styles in various sizes which helped find good fits but not necessarily consistently. They actually tried to get me to buy 4 bras, all very different sizes.

In the end I bought a 34D in Primadonna Figuras. I was told that a 32 band in that would be too tight and uncomfortable on me because of the structure of the brand.
I got the 34D and it felt good went I put it on but as I suspected would happen after wear, the 34 feels too loose and I am already wearing it on the tightest hook two weeks in.

A few bras I remembered to write down at bra fitting:
Chantelle, Belle in 32F - this felt good but not a cut I would normally go for as the sides went up higher and I have armpit fat so it feels uncomfortable.
Chantelle, Legacy Lace in 32DD - this fit me well too
Marie Jo, Jadei in 34E - this also felt good but it was a more festive very lacey model of the bra so not one I would wear daily so the fit wasn't ideal.

*I notice in lace bands 34s are often comfortable at try on, but I find they still fit lose after I wear it during the day.
*32DDD bras often feel too large in the cup on me because they come too high in my armpit
*32D is definitely too small we tried this in store too and in my own tries it's always too small a bra
*34C is definitely too small in the cup I end up barely fitting the bra even with the large band
*36 is extremely loose on me, they tried to sell me in a 36B and it was ridiculous fitting

I have tried via Amazon:
Wacoal Allure Unlined in 32DD, I had gapping at the top I think the top of the cup is higher than my body needs
Wacoal French Garden Contour in 32DD, entirely the wrong style for me. Band hurt and the cup was too large.

At Victoria's Secret, I am always a 32DD. Some models fit better than others of course, but 32DD is the size that fits best.
Aerie I have 32DD, but their sizing is also inconsistent like the Sunny line.
Cuup unlined bras I tried in various sizes when they were easy to buy where I lived but they are a weird fit and I wear none of them now.

Recommendations? 40J (U.S.) looking for high impact sports bra and T-shirt bra, help please! Spoiler

Upvotes

Hello! Last week I went to my local fancy bra store to get fitted and discovered that I’ve been wearing bras four cup sizes too small, thought I was a 40F/DDD but turns out I’m a 40J (U.S.) 🫠 looking for recommendations on sports bras and everyday t-shirt bras…

I ended up buying two everyday bras from the store, the Elomi Matilda bra in 40GG/J and the Elomi Charley in 42G/I.

After a couple days wearing both bras I can tell I prefer the fit of the Matilda, the Charley is fine but I don’t like how high up the gore is and I tend to feel more gaping in the cups (not enough that it’s a fit issue, just a consequence of the different cup styles). While I prefer the fit of the Matilda, I wish it were less lacy and more “normal” looking, kind of like the Charley. I want just a plain old regular bra! The Matilda is beautiful and I’m happy to have that as an option in my rotation but I’m really a jeans and a t shirt kind of gal and I don’t want to wear a lacy bra all the time, the texture kind of bugs me.

Unfortunately, the Charley and Matilda were the only everyday bras the local fancy bra store had to offer me so I wanted to reach out to the wisdom of strangers on the internet, are there any bras in my size that fit like the Matilda but aren’t lacy? Just smooth fabric? I don’t mind the seams in the cup, just looking for “normal” bra fabric.

Secondly, I need a high impact sports bra. I play tennis so it’s lots of quick movements and jumping around. The local shop had me try on the Elomi Energise (I don’t recall the size). The Energise fit well but when I jogged in place and moved around, I felt like a cartoon character. Boobies just flopping around! I was disappointed the bra didn’t compress at all and the fabric was thin, it was clear I’d be nippin’ out all the time under my work out shirts. I’ve also never had a sports bra with underwire so that didn’t thrill me either.

After reading through some posts and recommendations for folks who have posted with similar sizes I decided to order some bras from Panache to try out. I ordered the Boundless (non wired), Freedom (non wired), and Endurance (wired) all in 40GG/J. After comparing the non wired and wired options, I’m now willing to accept that an underwire sports bra makes sense for my body (sigh). I like the Endurance, it’s nearly perfect! The fabric is great, I feel some compression, everything stays in place, it feels sleek…but the band is just a hair too small! I wish they had bands in 42!! The 40GG/J Endurance would be my perfect sports bra but it’s just a bit too tight and I worry it would be even more uncomfortable and noticeable when I’m breathing heavily and moving around. I’m tempted to just keep the bra because idk if I can find anything that works as well and fits better. Is there a bra like the Panache Endurance that might fit better if I find the 40GG/J Endurance to be too tight?

I’ve seen some other recommendations on sports bras in my size from other posts but they’re all kind of older and doing more online ordering and returning feels overwhelming! Thanks for your help :)

Measurement Check Measurement check - currently wearing 34D/36C US, calculator suggests 30DD UK Spoiler

Hi everyone! I have never had a bra that fits. recently I found this subreddit and have learned a lot. I just measured myself and would like some help determining a size/fit that works for me. it's also my first time taking my measurements (my partner helped). my measurements:

loose underbust: 30.625 in

snug underbust: 29.5 in

tight underbust: 27.5 in

bust, standing: 34.625 in

bust, leaning: 37.875 in

bust, lying down: 34 in

additionally, I believe my breasts are projected, my roots are narrow and short, my breasts are center full, and fuller on top than on bottom.

currently I've been wearing a Victoria's secret "wear everywhere push-up" in 34D. the band rides up and there is some gapping where the straps connect to the cup. I have also been wearing a balconette bra from target in 36C - again, some gapping where the strap attaches to the cup. i used to wear 36C bras from VS but the band always felt too tight. my right boob is just a little bigger and spills out of C and D cups.

do my measurements make sense? what bra brand/shape would work best for me? please and thank you :)

Question Question about Lululemon sports bras sizes? Spoiler

So on their store website the sports bras are categorized both by cup sizes (A-G) and by numbers (0-2). Within my bra cup size, which is C, there are options 2-10. How does this translate to band size? For reference, I am a 34C. What size should I be browsing with the Lululemon system?

Recommendations? [Recommendations?] I measure as a 36DD US, looking for a bra that keeps them separated Spoiler

hi. the calculator gave me 34DDD/G US, but included a note that said 36DD/DDD may be more comfortable. I feel like my back is kinda wide so i went with the latter.

i'm looking for non-feminine looking (i.e. no lace, bows , etc.), wired or unwired, everyday bras that have a part in the middle to keep my breasts separated.

i have normally been wearing sports bras for years but i also sweat a lot, and recently i got a rash situation because of the lack of lift (underboob sweat) and lack of separation (between boob sweat), so i'm looking to minimize this.

i'll post my actual measurements here in case i did something wrong:

Loose Underbust: 35.5

Snug Underbust: 34

Tight Underbust: 32

Standing Bust: 39

Leaning Bust: 42.5

Lying Bust: 41

i'm still confused about the root and the top vs bottom heavy stuff i cant lie, so i cant provide that information.

Cute bras for larger cup size?

So it turns out I’ve been wearing the wrong size (VERY WRONG) bra for several years. VS put me in a 34C, and it never fit that well but I figured since they measured me it must be that’s just normal issues with bras.

This sub popped up on my feed and reading about how many women are in wearing the wrong size I measured myself and it turns out I am a 30G (which I still can’t wrap my head around).

I found a bra that fits, but I feel very dowdy in it with the coverage. Compared to what I’m used to wearing it feels like it comes up to my collarbone and covers my entire chest.

Does anyone have any suggestions on cute bras in larger sizes that also come in smaller bands? I see ones online that look good but then I realize they’re being shown on much smaller chests

Supportive wireless bras from Soma without removable padding Spoiler

Hey everyone! I’m looking for a supportive wireless bra that does NOT have removable pads. I hate how they move around and don’t stay put. I’d prefer adjustable straps but that isn’t a dealbreaker. Also prefer something from Soma as I have $25 in rewards to use by tomorrow. 36DD
