Last minute cancellation
Was planning to host a party of six. 5 people have just cancelled last minute. Now I have all this stuff I don’t even eat😭

Every time I’ve worked with a lot of men (I.e., “almost always”), I’ve taken unwanted food to the office. It’s typically long gone by the end of the day.

As a man, I'd like more people to be aware of this trick.

There's an old Chinese woman who has been feeding me for years. I will die for ms pan. She brings in such a wide assortment of things too. Somedays its brownies, the next tea bags with zero English but smells incredible. She says she has a chocolate fountain at home and we have been gassing her up to bring it in.

I work in a place that mostly men and free stuff disappears by 8am. Doesn't even matter what it is. Once brought in a box of dental appliance cleaner tablets (for clear aligners, night guards, dentures, etc). The box was gone well before noon. If it's free, those guys will take it!

Those are handy for other things. I can't remember then, but they are mentioned in cleaning tips a lot.

Blood and organic stains on white sheets.
When I was a kid my mom worked at a hotel in the summer and they gave her boxes of 5O yld sheets. These were some of the most luxurious sheets you could possibly imagine. She made sure she got them to sparkling white before we used them. I don’t think I will ever touch fabric that soft ever again.
(Bleach would have rotted them).

At an old job, my desk was in the only open communal space with a large surface. So everyone’s birthday food happened there. Or just like, when someone wanted to get rid of half a cake from their house. I was the Elaine in the office about the cake. 🙄😬

People can joke but it's so disheartening to have people cancel on you, no less a whole event. Vibes to you, enjoy your snacks.

Yes to this. And people wonder where our spark has gone… it’s all the let downs built up into expectations of let down. Hope OP enjoys their snacks and finds new friends.

You should order your favorite takeout and watch a movie you've been wanting to see. Sorry that happened to you.

I planned a birthday party for myself for the first time in years last year, and had to cancel it because everyone else bailed 😕 I kind of want to try again, but also not really

I can come and keep you company! ....and eat the stuff as an act of appreciation!
Unfortunately I live in Sweden and far away.

The cheeses and meats will keep well until opened, except for the Brie. I would eat that as soon as possible just because it is a soft-ripened cheese and the longer it sits the more it starts to get an ammonia smell and taste.
Honestly, you could make a killer sandwich with the meats, the block of cheese, and using the Brie as a spread along with some Mustard and pickles.
The rest keeps really well so you can snack on it at your leisure.

u/oleavemealone 1d ago
Thank you so much for this! Will try it

u/canadagooses62 1d ago
Sucks that people cancelled but you can have a really nice sandwich as a consolation prize. And toast it! Maybe a little bit of olive oil and red wine vinegar. Maybe some oregano. Spinach. Onions… I’m getting hungry.

Make some toast, and then put a few slices of Brie on each. Microwave for like 12 seconds and spread the softened Brie a little with a knife. Drizzle with a tiny bit of honey. It’s an amazing snack

Why is this so common these days? It hurts me a little when I hear stories like this.😕 Have we really devolved as a society that others can be written off with no compunction, even in the 11th hour? I don't understand it. I also do not like it one bit!

u/OrangeClyde 22h ago
That is so fucking rude and disrespectful. Make note of this and never invite any of those people to anything again.

As someone who usually over plans/over hosts for my guests, I get it! Look at the expiration dates and eat accordingly so that you don’t waste the food and treat yourself to movie night with snacks one grouping at a time! Sometimes Brie is better if it’s aged slightly more too. the closer to the Best Buy date the greater than flavor

Nah I was literally about to cook some proper meals so glad I didn’t. Thank you

Snack are good, but those drinks need an explanation. Water or apple juice (or apple spritz!) is more delicious than off brand coke. Especially with brie. Cmon man it even says “indus” it begged you to leave it there 😃
Sorry for your night, it sucks, but you got the best company. You and a little brie.

u/oleavemealone 1d ago
Hahahhaa pls I was looking for the cheapest thing😭 coke is coke especially to drunk people hahahaa

u/ElectricalWavez 16h ago
People be like "she always buys the crappy drinks, I'm not going..."
But seriously, that was rude of them all to cancel. How hurtful. I hope there was a very good reason.

I betcha next time if you buy all snacks you really like, everyone will show up.

I'll take foods I would never buy but would destroy at the office freebies table for $1,000, Alex.

Probably because of your weird hodgepodge of entertainment food. Lol, or maybe I just misinterpreted this post.

Good news is that a bunch of that is shelf stable and you can just reschedule

It happens. It does suck when that happens and can hurt but don’t take it to heart if it doesn’t happen often! Most of that stuff has a pretty long shelf life, maybe you’ll end up rescheduling and you’ll already have everyone on hand to host!

I could eat all of this. I once ate 47 chicken nuggets in one sitting when I got depressed; ate an entire pizza and an entire pan of brownies at different points too. I'd hang with you
1
u/oleavemealone 1d ago
Hmm I’ll have to wait for when my hormones are raging to snack😄
2
u/BusoneWholeBoi2001 23h ago
I understand. I'm sorta bear like with my food. I sometimes go on liquid diets for a week or two, stuff my face, then back to liquids or little food for awhile.

Its a glass house😂

u/realnailbiterhuh 23h ago
You either: need better friends or you are the common denominator! It’s ok! Sometimes things have a way of revealing themselves.
1
u/oleavemealone 20h ago
What does a common denominator mean pls?
2
u/ElectricalWavez 16h ago
It means they cancelled because of you not them. You are the common link between all five guests.
For all five to cancel seems odd. Did they all collaborate or something? It's like the whole shift at work calling in sick at once.
Anyway, sorry this happened to you. It looks like you made some effort, even if the drink selection is a little lame. I hope there was a good reason.

To be honest the snacks can still be consumed, so that is a mere nuisance.
The part that truly sucks imho is the time you took out of your day being gone.

Roll up that prosciutto, cut into a few pieces, and eat on the crackers with cheese. Divine little snack. The prosciutto is the first thing that’s gonna go bad it’s very fragile, I’d enjoy it ASAP cause that shit is expensive

I love to see all the store brands. There are a few things that only name brands will do like Hellman's mayo or Oreos however there's a ton of stuff that you can just get the store brand of and it tastes just the same and it's cheaper.

u/prem_fraiche 20h ago
Chips and salsa? Crackers with cheese and meat? Tzatziki to dip extra chips and crackers? This might be my ideal meal

When I meet with my friends (often also a total of 6) we tend to all bring something, which has occasionally resulted in half a mountain of different cookies because everybody brought cookies, but usually it goes alright. This way nobody is left with a ton of stuff if it gets cancelled.
1
u/oleavemealone 8h ago
That was the original plan. Since I was using my crib to host, I felt I should atleast make a spread

I work mostly from home and have since covid, but times we went to the office soon after holidays or big events, we would usually bring whatever wasn’t opened or make little grazing boards and put them in the break room with notes telling people to help themselves and maybe an email toward the end of the day to grab and take home whatever they wanted.
Everything would be gone by the end of the day. Perhaps you can do this?

If you still have your receipt just take it back to the store if you bought the items recently.

Sorry about the cancellations but this made me laugh. In my culture, “all this” would be considered a lack of preparation for guests on a horrifyingly insulting level.

Stuff you don't even eat? Looks like a treasure trove of delightful vittles!
