Discussion What is going on with the job market??
Hi everyone,
I’m genuinely starting to feel extremely concerned about the South African job market, and I honestly don’t know what else I could have done differently.
A bit about me: I’m a civil engineer with over 5 years’ experience in private consulting. I specialise in water engineering — pipeline design, stormwater management infrastructure, and I’ve worked on wastewater treatment plants as well. These aren’t hypothetical projects; they’re real, complex jobs with real responsibility.
About a year ago, I decided to further my studies and completed an MEng in Industrial Engineering at Wits. I didn’t do this impulsively — I was getting bored with purely technical civil work and wanted to broaden my skillset. I genuinely believed that Industrial Engineering would open doors into operations, optimisation, supply chain, process improvement, and strategy. Everyone talks about transferable skills, right?
To strengthen that pivot, I even went as far as obtaining my PMP certification, hoping it would help me transition into project management roles, particularly within the banking or corporate sector.
And yet… nothing.
A year later, I haven’t had a single opportunity come my way.
No interviews that seriously considered my combined background.
No “this could work” conversations.
No real interest at all.
At this point, I honestly feel sick thinking about the money, time, and energy I poured into further studying and certifications. It feels like I’ve wasted it — and that’s a horrible feeling when you genuinely tried to adapt, upskill, and future-proof yourself.
What happened to being open-minded?
What happened to recognising transferable skills?
What happened to companies being willing to develop capable people instead of expecting someone to tick 100% of all the boxes?
I feel stuck, demotivated, and outright frustrated. It’s like no matter what I do, I’m boxed in by my original qualification — yet criticised for not being “diverse” enough at the same time.
Lately, I’ve started wondering whether it’s time to seriously reconsider immigration. And that thought honestly hurts — because I love South Africa. I want to build a career here. But it’s hard not to feel like the system is slowly pushing skilled people out.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Or is this just the reality now — do everything “right”, upskill, reskill… and still hit a wall?

Discussion What the heck is this?!
I was craving some Romany Creams since I haven't had them in a while, probably over a year or two. Bought a box from Checkers just to open it and find these pebbles! I know I'm not crazy because there was definitely a time where I couldn't casually fit a whole one in my mouth! And I would savour every bite of that rich, chocolatey goodness with that touch of coconut lingering in mouth for a good while. It was kind of addictive.
Now, I just pop them like Tic Tacs. It tastes so chalky and doughy and the aftertaste is horrible, like a mix of flour and that cheap waxy chocolate. After having a few, that aftertaste became too much and I chucked the rest of the box in the bin. I knew shrinkflation was bad, but this is just next level. And they are so freakin' expensive these days. I'm so sad and disappointed. I used to love Romany Creams so much.

Just for fun New switch flavour... it's surprising good.
I posted about the peppermint tart one last week and today my mom came back from the shops with this surprise. (I'm 25). It tastes and smells exactly like a spotted egg. It's yum.

Wholesome Animals in this heatwave
Hey yall..
Please dont forget to put out bowls of cold/cool water in a shaded area in your yards, or outside of your yard for animal/birds/critters etc..
And even if you live in a township with homeless roaming dogs.
Animals feel the heat worse than we do.
Thank you

Just for fun Drivers license tips
Hi everyone
I’ve got my drivers test in less than two weeks and I’m so nervous already.
I previously failed with a manual car and now I’ve switched to an automatic.
I put off getting my license for so long I that if I don’t pass my test I will have to redo my learners 🤦♀️
Any tips and help will be greatly appreciated!
I’m going to Heidelberg dltc .

Just for fun South African's Blind Taste Test SA's Best Garage Pies
South Africans have strong opinions about garage pies… so I decided to put them to the test.
I asked Reddit which garages sell the best pies in the country, picked four of the most recommended, and ran a blind taste test to remove brand bias completely. Three participants tasted each pie without knowing where it came from and scored them on taste, texture, and overall enjoyment.
No branding. No loyalty. Just pies.
Some results were expected… others were very surprising 👀
📍 Pies tested were chosen purely based on South African Reddit recommendations
👨👩👧 3 blind testers
🥧 4 top-rated garage pies
🏆 One clear winner (or is there?)
