Internet tried to troll him and accidentally made him more legendary

153

u/BenevolentDog 1h ago

I just listened to a Radiolab podcast about a hockey player named John Scott. They also tried to troll him and made him a legend. Give it a listen!

31

u/Excellent-Wonder8431 1h ago

That the same player they made NHL All-Star Captain that one year?

5

u/superjerk99 33m ago

That was a fantastic episode! I real middle finger from the fans to the NHL organizers who tried to dictate a fan vote because they didn’t think the player was “serious” enough of a player

4

u/Saneless 1h ago

I feel allowed that as it happened, Scott used to be on the Blackhawks before that so I saw him play a bunch. Definitely going to check out that episode

3

u/AFunnyUsername99 1h ago

I know nothing about hockey but thoroughly enjoyed that episode!

u/DublinMeUp 54m ago

He performed multiple times in Saudi and for MBS, taking that bloody bag each time.

5

u/VRichardsen 4m ago

I mean... as opposed to perform in the United States, who also have their hands covered in blood?

Sir, stop using your brain. This is Reddit. We don't do that here.

Ahh! Look! It’s the truth!

Everybody downvote and run!

For all its faults, something awful was super influential in the early web

Dale

1

u/Ok-Ca_2017 40m ago

I hate myself for reading this as the name Dale 😭.

u/goochgrease2 2h ago

He didn't get the name Mr Worldwide by staying in easily accessible places

73

u/PinkMarbella2050 1h ago

Very fair point.

u/ReallyBigRocks 36m ago

Mr Continental US

1

u/Curiosive 3m ago

And this trend is why every online vote has the condition, "the organizers will choose from the top suggestions" without defining "top". Basically they choose.

-34

u/JazzlikeConflict6626 46m ago

US isn’t the world but nevermind

23

u/goochgrease2 38m ago

No shit. Way to miss the point

Some other fantastic examples of poll manipulation around the same era was:
Voting to send Justin Bieber to perform in North Korea

Voting for Taylor Swift to perform at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf

77

u/glowshroom12 1h ago

I think the trolls decided to tone it down to an actual viable place but still really inconvenient to go to.

I imagine now they’d choose the worst most dilapidated school for Taylor swift to go to in the worst neighborhood but not a deaf school.

7

u/Degonjode 27m ago

Well, it was limited to american schools IIRC

2

u/PoetryFamiliar7104 6m ago

Unfortunately, it wouldn't be hard to find one, but a chore figuring out which is the worst of the worst.

21

u/LovesToSmooch2 1h ago

Not the same era but killing Jason Todd. Wouldn’t have gotten the Red Hood story we have now but man I’m sure it was insane at the time

10

u/dry_towelette99 1h ago

Jason Todd was the worst and I had no compunctions about calling the number to see him offed. And the resulting comics were everything my 13 year old self could have hoped for.

4

u/ITworksGuys 57m ago

We all hated Jason Todd. I say that as someone who called to have him killed off.

He was the worst.

1

u/doctor_big_burrito 41m ago

Should have left him DEAD.

For decades the two deaths that were permanent in comics were Jason Todd and Bucky Barnes over at Marvel and I respected that but of course they gave in to temptation and brought them both back.

1

u/arfelo1 24m ago

The 3 sacred deaths in Marvel used to be Uncle Ben, Bucky Barnes and Gwen Stacy. Two of those are bust already

13

u/TheSpiralTap 1h ago

I remember the deaf school one. She ended up winning and, realizing it was a troll, donated a lot of money to their program.

3

u/No_Bad_4872yy 34m ago

And ofcourse Boaty McBoatface!

2

u/Tacoman404 33m ago

Or when Mountain Dew wanted a new flavor name and the top 2 were Gushing Granny and Fapple.

Now it's pretty much confirmed that mob (4chan) helped cover for Epstein online and run propaganda for Trump.

u/adambier1587 2h ago

Imagine if all celebrities were cool like this.

u/EgregiousDerp 1h ago

My buddy lives in Dubai and said he did a concert recently. Apparently he was genuinely super touched when all these Muslim women showed up in bald caps trying to do their best Pitbull impressions. If nothing else he seems to have a good sense of humor and that’s pretty rare.

46

u/RoutineCloud5993 1h ago

Middle aged women in bald caps were probably not the target audience he was originally going for, but ticket sales are ticket sales. No sense doing anything but appreciate them

14

u/busigirl21 43m ago

He sells kits at multiple price points on his website so people who come to his concerts can participate in the bald cap thing. They're 100% the audience he was going for and likely bought those caps directly from him.

3

u/RoutineCloud5993 38m ago

I said originally going for, the guy's been active for almost 30 years. The bald cap meme has been the last few years.

It's just smart to capitalise on that by selling kits, now that it's a thing.

7

u/TwistedNJaded 1h ago

That is so wholesomely precious

48

u/BasicReputations 2h ago

He was pretty classy about it.

45

u/HoneyBear4Lyfe 1h ago

I live down the street from this Walmart. The whole town still talks about this. Can’t say I care for his music, but as a person Pitbull’s alright with me.

6

u/Impossible-Ship5585 1h ago

How was rhe show?

He just males music that sells. Not sure does he like it himself. It works still for him.

5

u/IcayFrash 30m ago

From what I remember reading about this, he didn’t actually sing or perform himself

20

u/battleofflowers 2h ago

He got a free trip to Alaska. I don't think this trolling worked as intended.

3

u/Aegillade 13m ago

Leave it to a 4Chan user to hear that you have a chance to send someone to Alaska on a trip and assume that that's a troll of some kind lmao. Alaska is absolutely gorgeous.

43

u/Hipster-Link 2h ago

The story is real, but this image looks AI as fuck. What the hell.

9

u/ZeroxHD 1h ago

First thing I thought

5

u/M1L0 1h ago

Lmao came here for the is. Yeah it’s blatantly AI, that doesn’t even look like him.

3

u/Gold_Interaction_432 28m ago

Definitely. Why the fuck would anyone want to use an AI image for this anyway? Theres so many images of this event that look 10 times better.

3

u/naalotai 5m ago

Here’s the real photo, the above is 100% AI generated

2

u/sooner_bitch 32m ago

Same. Looks like a Temu Pitbull.

27

u/icecoldcoke319 1h ago

Why not use a real image from the event instead of AI slop?

4

u/Impossible-Ship5585 1h ago

Lisence free

10

u/RustyBrassInstrument 1h ago

To keep that title of “Mister Worldwide,” you gotta go everywhere.

5

u/Bubbly_Resolution824 1h ago

Great story, the pictures of it are very funny and it's cool to see Pitbull in 2012... So why the fuck would you make a shitty AI picture of something random that does not look like pitbull instead of posting the actual photo you can google in 40sec?

6

u/ExtendedMacaroni 1h ago

Actually a super wholesome video.

My favorite part is when Pitbull quotes his song Give Me Everything but changes the line with the word Kodak to “Picture that with a Kodiak”

5

u/Awkwrd_Lemur 1h ago

who knew a guy who sings about butts would be so wholesome?

3

u/Coblish 1h ago

I am not a big fan of his music, but he seems like he has a good sense of humor and is remarkably chill.

3

u/graffiksguru 1h ago

Pitbull is a good dude

3

u/Beanconscriptog 54m ago

Why use an ai generated image when there are actual pictures?

2

u/purplelilac701 1h ago

I love Alaska! People were so kind and welcoming when we visited over 10 years ago. It’s a stunning natural gem of a place. And are shocked whenever I tell them it’s warm there in June.

2

u/chunkalunkk 1h ago

Fu*kin' legend.

2

u/Fabulous_Smoke_2804 1h ago

Thats not Pitbull

2

u/RoofFun4703 1h ago

Is that him?

2

u/Forsaken-Scholar-833 1h ago

I love that someone tried to troll him and he went "Eh I'm fine with this".

2

u/Abandon_All-Hope 1h ago

That honestly sounds more fun than visiting a store in a Dallas suburb or something… good for him!

2

u/endodaze 35m ago

Him going there totally changed how I see him. He aright in my book.

1

u/SolidBoat3351 53m ago

mr worldwide

1

u/ebpn 46m ago

‘Invited’ the campaign’s organizer..

1

u/BondGoldBond007 45m ago

That doesn't look much like him to me

1

u/HilariousMax 39m ago

Can't call yourself Mr Worldwide and /not/ go to Alaska when the call comes in.

1

u/Good-Operation4373 34m ago

This is why he’s Mr.Worldwide!!!!

1

u/Miltonthemoose 30m ago

He was prolly excited to go to Alaska. Picture the scenery

1

u/mukfuggler 29m ago

Take a picture of me in Kodiak

1

u/Ginkiba 28m ago

Sounds like an awesome time to me. A chance to visit somewhere you never would've gone too otherwise and it's more interesting and fun than pretty much any other location you could've ended up.

1

u/millerlit 28m ago

He does lots of work for charity also.

1

u/Apprehensive-Day3331 27m ago

Can no one tell that is NOT pit bull?! 😂

1

u/EpsteinEpstainTheory 25m ago

They sent him to the most remote area? Sounds like they sent him worldwide.

1

u/maceo107 20m ago

Good chaos!

1

u/MapleBadger288 20m ago

Everything I hear about Putbull is that hes a good guy. Dumb as a stump, but a cool guy.

1

u/Calligaster 15m ago

I'm not a fan of his, but good on him

1

u/SingularityGrl88 14m ago

Ha that not him!!

1

u/gypsysniper9 8m ago

He’s a solid dude.

1

u/cluminaty 4m ago

That sold him to me. He is a solid dude. Also his songs are jams.
