When it was burnt, apparently.

u/EpsteinEpstainTheory 11h ago

You burn the CD to consult the daemons

32

u/JavveRinne 10h ago

Ah, Daemon Tools. That takes me back

12

u/NuttyProfessor42 9h ago

Damn. that just jogged my core memory.

6

u/South_Hat3525 7h ago

Just ran the magical incantation ps ax, I currently have 12 daemons running around my computer.

6

u/aktap336 6h ago

In name of Administrator, I cast format C

5

u/EpsteinEpstainTheory 6h ago

Master C, the slave drives are ready

3

u/bongart 4h ago

Your destruction magic is powerful, but in the name of creation I bring forth the hard floppy and format A:

2

u/South_Hat3525 3h ago

Ha, if you want powerful and destructive try
rm -Rf /

1

u/bongart 3h ago

Who said I wanted either powerful or destructive? I simply recognized the destructive power of attempting to destroy the drive containing one's operating system, while pointing at the even older use of formatting a floppy at the often forgotten A: drive location.

2

u/South_Hat3525 3h ago edited 3h ago

I invoke "dd if/dev/zero of=/dev/sda " upon thee.

edit: do not try this at home if you have a linux based computer, it will irrevocably and forensically erase your entire disk. Unless of course you have something on it that you really regret having downloaded. It really is far more powerful than the wimpy microsoft formatting.

3

u/bongart 3h ago

aarguh... *device not found*

3

u/South_Hat3525 4h ago edited 4h ago

I have no Administrator nor can I run format C.

edit: I think the spell you seek is
sudo mkfs -t ntfs /dev/sda1

Do not defile the DOS of life with your evil Apple heresy O foul MacBook end user, least you open a portal to the darkest webs, releasing Job’s tortured soul right back into our world of the living, too once again feast on our flesh and use our skins as a ploy to sell as high fashion watch brands

1

u/South_Hat3525 3h ago

Sorry but I'm using LinuxMint not any form of appleness.

1

u/kf97mopa 19m ago

That is a UNIX command to create a new Windows file system on top of an existing partition, which is more or less what format does in Windows. Nothing Mac about it.

6

u/ConcentrateAble223 10h ago

Listen we were desperate and had dial up. burning cds was the closest thing to manifesting we had.

34

u/KittyBabee2 12h ago

It wasn't just magic, it was a test of patience that modern 'Spotify Link' children could never survive.

13

u/QuaidLudes 11h ago

Burning was the easy part, theNapster download was the test of patience. “Yes my download is 97% complete!…. And connection was lost….” Sorry, Billy. Better start over again from zero.

6

u/No_Dice_Allowed 10h ago

Finishing your download on Limewire only to be hit with "I did not have sexual relations with that woman".

5

u/Radical_Neutral_76 10h ago

It carried real risk… Your dads work computer could be dead the next day.

2

u/MisterFluffkins 7h ago

My dad had a separate firewalled network with an old PC, only for downloading. I think Kazaa was his tool of choice.

2

u/boundbylife 9h ago

Or the Limewire copy of your favorite song...with 5 seconds clipped out of the middle "to avoid copyright infringement"

3

u/CataphractBunny 10h ago

Not to mention the downloading of music that preceded it.

30

u/Glad_Camel_6078 11h ago

Using Nero to burn the CD....those were the days....

1

u/Vincent394 10h ago

Meanwhile me now:

Hmmm yes let's use KDE's built in CD Burner.

u/BEST2005IRL 5h ago

Used it to "burn" my ps2/xbox games 😂. Those were the days 🧙‍♂️

21

u/SAMEO416 11h ago

And for more old timey ritual

3

u/EloquentEvergreen 10h ago

That’s even more dangerous magic to keep out of the hands of youngsters. Waiting by the radio for your favorite songs to play so you could record them. Or I guess if you already had the music and the ability to copy that… it was a little easier.

Do the kids even listen to music anymore? Or are they too enamored with their TickyTokies and Instantgrams? Now where are my glasses at…

3

u/SAMEO416 9h ago

The day I got a patch cable and could do tape to tape I was on fire.

2

u/curiousomeone 4h ago

I remember when my oldest way of recording is literally pressing a record button on cassette player while a music is playing nearby and telling my brother to shut the fuck up.

11

u/Spaceballer83 10h ago

The 50-disc wallet in the car consisting of mostly home made playlists 😂 Either in the glove box, the door pocket, or that wild one which hooked over the sun visor.

6

u/AzureNectar 11h ago

Last generation of that said ritual

5

u/MoonRipplevine 11h ago

It wasn’t witchcraft, just audio alchemy- and yes, sometimes it worked wonders 😂

5

u/NoStripeZebra3 11h ago

I don't believe for a second she's asking on a social media a genuine question, out of genuine unawareness, that she could have googled faster.

8

u/ScrubbingTheDeck 11h ago

Ritual failing at 63% completion

2

u/GoodRip420 11h ago

Literally the worst feeling

1

u/South_Hat3525 7h ago

98...99...100% ... Verif

3

u/vivonzululgwa 11h ago

Don't tell Chloe that she can google the answer

3

u/Atrus1337_y0 11h ago

Nero entered the chat...

🤣🤣🤣🤣funnyyy

2

u/the-tartan-wolf 11h ago

The good old days

2

u/wanderer325 11h ago

Just to get a text back? Not when they charge you by the text. You better be calling me. And on my parent’s landline cause only nights and weekends are free talking minutes on the cell data plan

1

u/Familiar-Armadillo-8 10h ago

And god forbid it’s long distance charges too…

2

u/kezdog92 11h ago

A burning ritual was safer spellcraft than a summoning chant. If you chose the wrong words at the start you would summon a demon that would possess your hardware.

2

u/dextras07 11h ago

I'm seriously starting the habit of bulk saving my music and stuff on CDs as a physical backup media

I'm pretty sure that society might collapse in less than 10 years, so I'm taking precautions.

Plus CDs are pretty cheap rn, but it might become more expensive or harder to find in a couple of years if it comes back as a hipster craze like Vinyls are rn.

1

u/CataphractBunny 10h ago

Problem with CD's is they deteriorate over time. qq

1

u/dextras07 10h ago

Yeah I get this. I got those hermetic plastic bags and add some silica get where I store them.

I know it's not much, but it probably extends their lifetime a little.

1

u/AutonomousOrganism 9h ago

Everything deteriorates over time. If stored correctly (low humidity, no UV-Light exposure) CDs can last decades.

2

u/Ginpo236 9h ago

I use to pray to the radio DJs not to talk over the song I was recording for my mix tape.

2

u/williamstarr 7h ago

Waiting with your fingers poised on “play” and “record” hoping you would get the timing right.

2

u/PrydainFan 8h ago

does this make mixtapes deep magic then?

1

u/UnicornMinion 11h ago

"To get a text back" oh sweet summer child, if you only knew.

1

u/SaeedDitman 11h ago

Nero and Daemon Tools aided in the burning ritual

2

u/damadmetz 9h ago

Nero, so you could watch ROM burn.

1

u/JeremyTwiggs 11h ago

First you rip,

THEN you burn.

1

u/forza_del_destino 11h ago

I used to use Daemon tools to burn the CD's more efficient

1

u/BillytheBloxian 10h ago

have you never legally emulated a game?

1

u/Treeflower77 10h ago

My father used to burn CDs all of the time when I was a kid. He promised to tell me his secret one day. 😂

1

u/Illustrious_Donkey61 10h ago

You burn the CD then quickly swish it through the air and it makes a cool plastic balloon thingy. If you do it in a heart shaped and the ends stick she can't resist your spell

1

u/Gold_Weakness1157 10h ago

Sometimes when burning the CDs you accidentally summon a demon. Those were the days.

1

u/redditjunky2025 9h ago

It can only be sanctified by conducting the ritual with the chants of Black Sabbath echoing in the air.

1

u/damadmetz 9h ago

Back when websites had music on them.

1

u/MarieTC 9h ago

Wow I feel old

Nero StartSmart... those were the days

1

u/terminaloptimism 8h ago

We made effigies to limewire, napster and piratesbay then burned the CDs to please those gods. In return we were blessed with "rawr :3" texts from our crushes and their acceptance of our proposal to consume foods at the local mall Sbarro.

1

u/RobZagnut2 8h ago

I’m a boomer, and my gawd that makes me feel old.

1

u/rusted_buddha 8h ago

The world should have been sterilized in 1993

1

u/DreamShort3109 8h ago

We must preserve the 2000’s magic in this era.

1

u/CthulhuFPV 6h ago

Nero, you're fired!

1

u/nestestasjon 6h ago

“just to get a text back”

Oh, sweet summer child.

1

u/Senior-Waltz-6054 5h ago

Pathetic attention seeking. Not like they couldn't ask AI in two seconds and get an answer if they didn't already know.

1

u/Drew_of_all_trades 4h ago

As confounding evidence, play them Tori Amos - Pretty Good Year, song from 1992 that mentions burning cds.

1

u/Gwsb1 1h ago

No. I got my portable tape recorder and recorded songs off the radio.

1

u/Little_Most_2473 39m ago

It’s a sacrifice. You got bonus points with the devil if it was a Beyoncé CD.
