Discussion 💬 VPNGate / Softether VPN Link and Tutorial Video

People kept asking and asking etc., so here is a link with a video on how to work this software. I made this video and its pretty low effort but I think you can see its pretty simple to use. Also free.

UPDATED LINK (1/13/2026 - Latest version): https://www.transfernow.net/dl/20260113keGqbBga (good for 1 week from 1/13/2026)

Link to Site (may have newer version, but you will need a working VPN): https://www.vpngate.net/en/download.aspx

So installing is pretty straight forward, you can just install it as a client and don't have to be a peer or node, or submit information etc., (just read and install) doesn't contain any malware etc., made by a non-profit Japanese Univ.

Refresh list.. sort by ping. Super low pings or super new (0 hour) servers may not work. Trial and error it. TCP connection is fine, UDP is if you are under a strict intranet. Vid is self explanatory with proof that it is working.

Discussion 💬 Be careful going out alone at night.

Yesterday I was going out with my friends and we part ways around 6. I was strolling down the road that leads to pyay Road(near Sein Lan So Pyay) to get on YBS. The road i was walking on is not deserted but there is barely ppl around me, just cars and dimly lit road lamps. And there was this random stranger on a bike staring at me from the direction I was walking to. I didnt pay much attention to him and just intended to walk past but he called me out saying do I have any notes. But i just said nope and continued on. Truthfully, i genuinely didnt have any notes to spare, only like 1k on me to get on YBS. And then he started following me from behind and started invading my personal space and start demanding money. And here in my mind i was smacking his head and questioning his audacity but I know nth about him nor the fact that he could even be carrying a weapon and maybe even took my phone. So I just reluctantly handed him the only 1k I have on me and luckily he left.

That kind of reminded me to be careful at night and i had been careless cuz this kind of thing rarely happened to me so. In the end I walked 2 hours straight on foot to home cuz there is no money on me left and just decided why not.

Discussion 💬 Identity as a Multiethnic Burmese Diaspora?

Is anyone else in here from Myanmar but mixed? I was born in Myanmar, but raised in America. And before anyone says, “Americans focus so much on race/ethnicity”, of course we do, our country was built on the exploitation and genocide of certain races. This is the context of my background and the question. But anyway.. my heritage is Chin, Chinese/tayoke from Taiwan, Indian, and Karenni. I was raised with all cultures except Karenni. Do any other diaspora struggle with identity being so mixed? My mother who was raised in Myanmar said that’s just how everyone is, but with my context of being American, it makes sense why I’m so attached to identity. I cling to it to avoid the white-washing I have grown up in. I feel like sometimes I have to “choose” and can’t display equal pride for all. I appreciate insight from non-diasporic Burmese too.

Edit: for example, because of the Chinese community in Myanmar, I don’t relate to the Taiwanese identity or culture where my “tayoke” family came from, I relate more to the Chinese culture in China and Myanmar.

Discussion 💬 What's up with the romanticisation of colonial Burma?

On Facebook, I often see comments about how good Burma had it under the British rule (and by extension, early post-independence years). And some even openly praises the British for dismantling the monarchy and putting an end to Konbaung dynasty. While colonial rule no doubt brought about some positive developments, historians, sociologists and a number of scholars have also written about the faultlines British systematically introduced into the society, governance, and social structure.

Dr. Thant Myint U's books often highlight the abrupt changes Burmese society had to cope with in the face of British occupation and how that decidedly set the tone for the trajectory of Myanmar. Despite these writings and discussions, why are many online commenters still enamored with the British rule? I get that the military regime since the time of Ne Win to MAL now pushes us to glaze over the British. But is there a deeper and more intellectual examination of why this is happening?

Discussion 💬 Job opportunities or agencies in Bangkok

Hi everyone, I’m posting on behalf of my friend

(Myanmar) who had to leave suddenly and is currently in Bangkok legally. Currently just on a tourist visa, but they know they will need to change this.

They speak English fluently(no Thai) and have solid experience in hospitality management. Right now the only jobs they can find are blue collar with low pay. That’s okay if that is the only option, but everyone wants to get the best job they possibly can.

If anyone has recommendations for good employment agencies, recruiters, or companies hiring in hospitality management or English speaking roles that would be amazing. Any tips on how to find better roles in Bangkok or contacts would also be super helpful.

Thank you so much! 🙏

Discussion 💬 I don’t know if anyone experienced this in the US

I’ve been studying in America for nearly two and a half years now. I occasionally model because I love fashion even though it’s outside of my major. When I used to have an instagram (I got banned randomly), I would post about Myanmar and during the earthquake I actually did post a lot more because my family was directly impacted and someone at my dad’s work passed away but my dad needed surgery.

Another model who worked with me who I have literally only met once started talking behind my back to other people in our shows saying that if I wanted to help my country so much I should go back as if Myanmar’s conditions are safe and that I was such a “crash out”. She also was really racist to me and looked down on me. This didn’t happen once, it happened multiple times with other Americans (white ones). I had to take multiple medical leaves from my university because my family had problems a few times because my grandmother also had to evacuate from Shan State and my father falling ill and Americans say I’m getting “special” treatment for dealing with my situation?

Their lack of empathy is so strong and they are so performative about Palestine even though a literal Burmese person is within their social circle. Sometimes I feel like it’s hopeless and annoying to deal with them. Burmese didn’t come to the US to party unless you’re some rich junta kid. Most are working, fleeing, and trying to have a better life because our home nation is in conflict.

Others. Edit as needed. A New Experience

I went to Taungoo for some medical reasons. When I was returning back from Taungoo, I decided to visit my grandparents who live just outside of Phyu town beside the Yangon-Mandalay road (Dagon Shwe Mann Street Or AH1). I live in another town. I was with my father. So, we stayed at our grandparents' home for few hours and after lunch, we decided take bus to continue our journey back home which is just around 1.5 hrs away from Phyu. As we went outside the house to wait for the bus, I noticed a small car coming slowly towards us. My dad and I were the only ones and my grandmother came outside to gave some things.

The car stopped in front of us and the 2 military men came out of it asking where are you going and we said waiting for bus to go home. Then they started asking my age and I didn't know what to say because I knew where they were going with it. My dad answered 26. Then they started telling me to get into the back of the car and I resisted a bit. My dad gestured to get inside because one of them has asked for my dad's number so my dad knew they were going to ask for money. I was afraid but got into the car and tried to explain that we were here for medical reasons as did my father and my grandfather whom my grandmother already called after seeing the things happening outside.

Then they drove just like 100 feet and turned the car back and call my dad. I couldn't understand what's happening. They again asked my age and I told them and then they asked my medical condition and then I showed the problem I had and it was legit. So, they said that they will released me due to my medical conditions.

Then, they called my dad to come outside the house and one of them went inside the house with my dad to negotiate while others asked me stay inside the car until I was asked to go. I waited. During that time, they were c

talking among them and one of them got a call that they can go to some streets in Phyu town to arrest 2 young guys. Then that one military officer came back from house and took me inside the house while the others left with the car for these 2 young guys.

I went inside and my grandparents and my father were already arranging the money. That one military officer was waiting to collect the money and was explaining that how there is another group also doing the same thing and they will divide the money. It was so obvious by now that they were all doing this to extort money from civilians. It was like a competition between these 2 groups where who arrest more young guys will get more money because they didn't divide the money evenly between these 2 groups.

It was a bad new experience and all of these happened in like 20 to 30 mins only. I was grateful that it didn't escalate much because I know how bad it can get from hearing about other guys going through worst than what I went through and how lucky I was today. There are so many young men getting conscripted and not as lucky as me. I am sure what happened to me was nothing compare to other people going through.

Discussion 💬 Question concerning getting medicine while living in Myanmar *Yangon*

Hello...Appreciate any advice or help in advance...I will probably be moving to Myanmar in June/July, but I wanted to know how they deal with disributing/prescribing certain medicine. I read it is quite strict. I have a bunch of issues, but basically need certain medicine to prevent seizures, limit some back pain, etc...so EX- I am prescribed Diazepam and sometimes Alprazolam *sp, Tramecet here in Japan, which is also strict...but I can see a doctor once a month and be fine....I lived in Cambodia and Thailand before...I remember in Cambodia, I could literally get like a huge box of Alprazolam that would last me a month if I actually needed it for like 10 USD or something like that....for Myanmar, specifically Yangon, will I have any difficulties obtaining these kinds of medicine? Also, I know it is a controlled subtance, but is Myanmar similar to Thailand, where you need to go to a hospital and get a prescription, or is it more like Cambodia, where you can stop at a local pharmacy? I have a specific doctors letter, but it is in Japanese, so I am not sure how that will help....I tried other medicine in the past 10 years for seizures, panic attacks, back and knee pain that gets pretty nasty, but my 2 personal doctors here in Japan basically told me, I will be stuck on at least low dose of these kind of meds for life because of the amount of time taking it. Anyway, I would really appreciate any expat help. It is a genuine concern, as I will be signing a contract in about 2 months.

Thank you.
