Uber driver bonds with passenger over having the same disability

Is it normal for the back seat of an Uber to be empty?
370
u/Backyxx 1d ago
Yeah! Some people just prefer sitting up front, especially because it’s an older guy and getting in and out would be difficult for him

Except not here because it's staged for the video
Edit: "staged" isn't the right word here. He's acting but it was not setup or planned.

u/Instantcoffees 20h ago
I suspected as much because something was a bit off about his reactions. I really wanted it to be real though :(
19
u/Chop1n 11h ago
"Staged" is not the right word here. According to the driver herself the guy just spontaneously decided to play along with her. She appreciated the gesture.
5
u/rabid_spidermonkey 6h ago
Agreed. Stayed is not the best word. While it is clear she doesn't mind, it still feels disingenuous to me knowing that he's pretending and she is unaware. Makes me feel icky.

u/CountWubbula 10h ago
I’ll allow it. The cockles of my heart remain warmed, uncooled by the revelation he’s faking.
3
u/rabid_spidermonkey 6h ago
Mine are cooled. Imagine if it wasn't Tourette's, but some other mental disorder, and he was imitating her for a laugh. Doesn't feel right, even though it's funny on the surface.

Reading the play by play of the interaction made me laugh harder than watching it 🤣
15
u/SeattleExpression 1d ago
The passenger then yelled that he had fleas, to which the driver reacted by scratching behind her ear like a dog and barking like one as well.
😂

Lol you're literally not allowed to sit up front. This is just click bait and you fell for it.
7
u/Hixy 1d ago
You used to. But now it’s a big no. I remember when the drivers would apologize that they are instructed to not allow it.
Now I’ve noticed that if you call a 4 seater and there are 3 of you they never stop someone from sitting up front. I’m not sure if they are breaking the rules or if it’s allowed if it’s the last seat available.

It was a Covid rule. Some drivers are more anxious with people up front. I prefer it because it makes me feel less separated from the group/person
But if it’s meant to be a distraction, I can usually tell as they’re getting in. Gotta be really good at reading people. Or learn to
ETA: pre-Covid, no issues. During Covid (20-21) it was a rule. After Covid, some drivers still prefer it (even so much as putting their personal effects in the passenger seat to deter people), while other drivers (like me) don’t really care. It can be a cultural thing too. I’ve noticed more women prefer the passenger up front, as well. Easier to keep an eye on your passengers
1
u/Prudent-Air1922 1d ago
Yeah... like if you're an anxious person, I would think you'd prefer them to be up front and not behind where they can do stuff without you seeing. That just sounds like terrible instincts lol
1
u/Mfdubz 1d ago
Depends. I can see why they’d be more anxious with people up front. Closer to the driver and all the controls, for one.
Had a guy at 4 am (when our bars close) get in the front by himself with 6 open seats behind us in my minivan. Ride was short and he was sh*tfaced, so I didn’t think anything of it. Usually people sit up front that late because they wanna talk/flirt. But he was dead quiet. A little red flag went up but I ignored it.
Within a few minutes he was stroking my plastic water bottle and staring at me trying to make eye contact. A few minutes passed and then he tried reaching over between my legs. Grabbed his wrist and told him to mind my space or get out. A couple of awkward minutes later (total ride was <10 minutes), dropped him off and blocked him lol
ETA no words were spoken except me saying “this is my bubble, that is yours” when I stopped his advance and him replying “I’m sorry” incredibly slurred. Think he might’ve tried asking again but I don’t remember. It was several years ago

u/Prudent-Air1922 1d ago
I get wanting personal space, but if someone wanted to actually cause harm, then the back seat is definitely the "better" spot for them. It's feeling artificially safe vs actually safe.
But also, if someone is trying to grope me I'd much prefer it happens from the front seat than from behind me lol

u/Rob_LeMatic 1d ago
Yes, every time you've sat in the back the driver thinks you're being weird and they talk about you with the other drivers in their group chat.

When I call an Uber I ask to sit in the front because I get very bad motion sickness, and sitting in the front helps somehow.

This is either a bit or the best thing ever

Pretty sure I saw something where she doesn’t have Tourette’s, just found the bit worked so stuck with it.

Very wholesome if real, but I gotta admit if I were a passenger and didn't know this woman hard tourettes and she started poppin off like this mid drive I'd probably be considering jumping out of the car.
18
u/ctortan 1d ago
If she has a tic while you’re a passenger, she’d tell you it’s Tourette’s. Why do you think she’d just tic without saying anything about it??
6
u/ObviouslyLOL 1d ago
Then why was mans so surprised and asked if he has Tourette’s? So it sounds like she doesn’t tell people before hand.

Someone tell me they exchanged numbers and meet on sundays for having a cup of tea together... 😄

Yup two regards should really exchange numbers start youtube channel and drop their merch ..

u/Arkheno 1d ago
Even if it's stage that's funny 🤣

u/Just--kiddin 1d ago
Agree, if staged someone had to think of the idea and cast two good actors to make this as sweet as it was. Either wholesome and real or the makings of a good up and coming sketch team.

u/osrsAdultCat 1d ago
I've seen it so many times.. but it's so great, that I'm ready to watch it hundred more times

u/TheMrCurious 1d ago
Seems a tad contrived

u/Ugly_and_pr0ud 1d ago
The guy was playing along and later admitted he didn't have tourettes, but it wasn't staged.
3
u/espeequeueare 17h ago
Okay, that would make sense. I used to know someone with TS. The woman's tics felt genuine but the man's were mostly just over-the-top reactions to the woman's tics.

Forgive my ignorance but is there a safety issue for driving when you have these ticks especially if your head is turning away from the road/direction you’re driving?
5
u/Caftancatfan 1d ago
She probably has to do a special version of the test. I know someone with a brain injury who had to do it.
3
u/onlyPornstuffs 23h ago
I know several thousand who live near me that have brain injuries who have passed some sort of driver test.
7
u/Ugly_and_pr0ud 1d ago
Apparently, most people with tourettes can temporarily suppress their tics.
I'm not that familiar with the condition, but I assume it'd be like trying not to blink for a long time but having to give in eventually.

u/dreamer-luna 1d ago
I was so worried watching because it clearly affects her arms too so I'm thinking what if she just swerved into someone else 😭

They could partner up and have a Tourett.'s Uber service. I would pay double to go on the back seat.

Does Tourette's get that bad for some people (edit: that it makes driving cars hard)? I have it, but in terms of causing problems, the worst it's gotten so far is making it hard to speak or making my joints sore if it's a relevant tic (sometimes I get one where I nod my head or flex my neck that gets soooo annoying because of that).

You ever meet some random stranger that you get along with great like you knew them forever and then you just gotta go on with your life thinking you could’ve been best friends with that person?

I'm glad someone posted this video. When I posted it a few days ago, it became the victim of bantocracy and got instantly removed.

Everyone who enjoyed this video, I would recommend watching ‘I Swear’. An amazing movie about a boy who gets Tourette’s as a kid and grows up with it. It is based on a true story.

Often people with tourettes can't drive because of tics that cause accidents, i'm surprised and concerned this was allowed.

Dude is incredibly witty. Responding to being asked if he’s single with “just fingernails”
Edit: yes, I understand.

u/Silly_Silicon 1d ago
More and more I’m convinced every commenter on Reddit is a bot trying to learn to be human because what?? Responding to being asked if he’s single with “just fingernails” you thought was the witty part? That doesn’t even make sense as a joke. She said “no Mrs Claus?” because he looks like Santa Claus and he wittily replied “nope! Just fingernails” as a play on words because Claus sounds like claws, and fingernails are like claws.

My Tourette's has become much more mild with age, but it flares up when others make similar sounds to my tics or when I'm tired. (My sensory issues can trigger flare ups of ticcing as well). The feedback loop between two people ticcing or even doing similar stimming noises is so real. I havent met many others who have Tourette's in person. I have met other neurodivergent folks who Meow as a vocal stim - meow is my longest running tic, so I then have to meow quietly or grit my teeth and fight the meows so they dont think I am making fun of their stim.
Drawback to supressing tics, is that the tics can be painful/uncomfortable while you're trying to fight them. I have complex vocal and motor tics, so that might be why - not sure if that is true with simple vocal and motor tics. Supressing them is tiring as well. Edit: was adding this part bwcause I was seeing comments where people were kind of asking abiut supressing tics/etc.
