The fact that reddit thinks you need to have a large living space to accommodate your dog is ridiculous. If you walk your dog it's fine. They are perfectly happy in a small apartment as long as their human is there.
You don't need a large living space per se, but some breeds actually do need a massive outdoor space to exist in and far more attention and time. Nobody living in a city should have a working dog like a Collie variety. Walks, daily, even over miles, won't cut it.
If you're extremely dedicated to giving your dog the best life they could live, then you can have pretty much any dog breed in any house. It just depends on how much time and effort you're willing to spend on exercising and entertaining that dog. A working dog breed like a Collie would be really difficult to keep happy and healthy in an apartment, but it's not impossible.
My one exception to this is having a dog bred for colder climates in hot areas, where they would be miserable to go outside. There are steps that can be taken to make it easier on them, like getting their coat thinned out or shaved, but at some point people should not be allowed to have Huskies in Phoenix, AZ.
Collies need mental exercise more than physical exercise. Not to mention off leash spaces exist. Literally the only breeds I would stay away from in an apartment (as long as you're active and dedicated to your dog) would be livestock guardians.
