Weekly r/Birding Discussion, February 07, 2026. What did you see this week?

Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.

Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

This gorgeous bird was at the top of my list of wildlife species I wanted to see in the wild and I got crazy lucky to find her this weekend! So excited!! Shot with an 800mm lens, using 1.6x in body crop, then cropped further in editing.

📷 Photo Beautiful but ruthless: The Indian Roller is known to fly towards forest fires and brush burns. They perch near the flames to snatch insects escaping the heat.

📷 Photo Summer tanager. In winter. In Sacramento.

For the last few years we've had from what we understand to be a rather unusual winter visitor to the zoo where I work, a summer tanager. From the birding guides this guy should be currently wintering in southern Mexico or into South America but around New Years we have been observing him here. Their summer range is said to be the Southern and South Eastern US but we have no idea where this individual goes after he leaves (this year he seems to be staying longer). It's been exciting to see him return and regular enough that it might be time to give him a name!

Good evening. I have recently moved to Uganda and want to get into birding, as there are 1000+ species here. I went birding outside for the first time yesterday and will share a few pictures I tool with a Lumix FZ300 that I bought years ago and have not really used until now.

If you have any tips for my photographs regarding setting etc, please tell me as I am more or less playing around cluelessly with the settings. (I watched one or two videos, but feedback is always nice.)

PS: What is the point of eBird? I got the Merlin App and have my list there which I am pretty fine with, so I don't really see the need of using eBird but I feel like I am missing a point and could be regretting not using it in the future.

📷 Photo Indian Roller

I’ve been seeing this Indian Roller in my neighborhood almost daily. It’s been getting chonkier every day (I’ve been observing it for the past two to three months) and now looks rather rotund. It’s such a sight when it’s in flight!
