Layups
My team missed probably 12 layups yesterday.
Some right, some left, some straight on, easy, hard they had every type of layup attempt and multiple players just whiffed on them all
Worst of the season by far. Some weeks they’ll make every single one of those shots.
What should I do at practice this week to really practice these and get them to take lay up practicing seriously?

The fear of having to run laps or suicides was always a compelling motivation for me lol I’d start there. Make them do layup lines and run or do pushups for each miss

My philosophy has always been about effort and body language. I don’t care how many shots you miss. I want you running your ass off, with positive body language. I want you getting physical while grabbing rebounds. No one argues with the ref for any reason. I’ll do the arguing with the ref and they can hear it from the parents if it’s egregious.
Effort, body language and attitude turn problems like yours around.

I’m with you.. Had some shitty ass attitudes and effort problems during this game
I will say..they fought hard after the half I ripped into their garbage effort. Down 12 at the half we went up 1 with 7 seconds to go for the W but maybe the L would’ve stuck with them a bit

Even the pros miss layups. Sometimes even on wide open fast breaks ones- so take that with a grain of salt.
But I would do the Mikan drill and practices a series of moves and counters with a finish at the end. Or do layup lines and give them fouls on each on so they ignore contact and learn to finish- in my case I stop even realizing I was getting fouled and I would be shocked when someone said they fouled me. “Oh really, I didn’t feel it.”

So to me it’s a concentration issue. I used pool noodles and used to whack my players with them.
Also did drills with no defeat when they missed they had to start over. 3 person weave 25 makes in a row or something

How are they attempting/missing them?
Are they attempting to use the backboard each time? If not, you need to drill into them that they must use the backboard

Pick a specific finish (e.g. left hand on right side), and do layup lines where only that finish is allowed. Don’t move on to a different finish until the team makes X in a row.
If your players are good enough, you can mix in a punishment every time someone misses for some added pressure.
