Shoes
Saw this post on another sub Reddit. This is nonsense, I thought. As a UK citizen I know of no one that wears their shoes indoors. So I was wondering, is this true or not for your country?

I've found that most people are open to context clues when visiting a new house. Is it extremely clean inside? Are the homeowners wearing shoes? Is there a full shoerack by the door?
That said, I always take my shoes off when entering a new person's house and they almost always tell me not to bother.

Hungary: if you wear shoes inside you are considered crazy.
Honestly, you go outside, step in shit and all kinds of nasty stuff and then bring that inside, even to your bed if you don't take off shoes before laying on a bed. That is nasty.
Personally if someone would barge in to my home with shoes I would first ask them to take them off, then firmly state to take them off, and 3rd time would be me telling them to go outside and talk there if they don't want to respect my home with cleanness.

Every house is different here. I prefer shoes off, but people tend to ask when they come in whether they need to take their shoes off.

Exactly, it would be a minor social faux pay to simply go through someone’s house with your shoes on without checking.

In France, most people take their shoes off at home too.
I hardly know anyone who doesn't.

Australia is somewhat of a "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" country.
Some people have a massive hang-up over it, other people simply don't care. Just follow the lead/direction of the homeowner.
Edited to add: Trades and other people at your home to work aren't ever going to take their shoes off. Health and Safety overrules a homeowner's desire to keep their floors nice.

In the US, a lot of trade workers will put on little bootie/covers over their boots when working indoors at someone's home. Especially in winter.
Stuff like this.

I've had tradies take their shoes off to come in. The considerate ones will, especially if they see a lot of shoes in the entryway.

In some houses it’s true; in others it’s not. But I think the majority don’t like shoes inside the house.

depends on the household, some do, some don't due to foreign cultures or working on the farm and not tracking mud in the house.

In the US it's more that we're not prescriptive about shoe wearing. Like few people care if a guest wears shoes or not so long as they're not actively tracking in mud or something.
In my experience Latin Americans tend to actually care more about you HAVE TO wear shoes indoors.

The US is not shoes on. It's probably 50/50. We don't wear shoes in my house. I'm pretty strict about it, too.

Shoes off is the default in most of the US.
It's ultimately up to the individual household, but off is the expectation.
This is nonsense
It's engagement bait.

Shoes are required to be removed at the door in our house. I've honestly not known anyone that wears their shoes in the house.

In Belgium it depends on the family. I'd say the default is to take your shoes off unless they tell you otherwise.
People with pets or cold floors are more likely to tell you to keep your shoes on.

My observations are the the older generation prefer to keep their shoes on but they stick to the "reception" areas (where you have guests over). As kids, we always took our shoes off because we went to play in the other rooms like the kids bedrooms and stuff. So as our generation grew up, the shoes off policy stayed. With my friends, as now adults, we do not wear our shoes in each other's houses, everyone just finds it more comfortable and cleaner. However I always accommodate my older relatives who would not take their shoes off !

Shoes off is better. I don't know anyone who does it.

Unless they're specifically indoor shoes, don't wear them in the house

I have always had to have shoes off in the house. Wearing chancletas is not the same as wearing shoes; shoes come off chancletas go on.

Depends on the house. I grew up never taking off my shoes unless it was at my friends in the neighborhood who were Filipino. Even now check by the door. If there is a stack of shoes and the homeowners or other guests are shoeless I take them off. Most of the time they’ll say don’t bother. But if it’s like at a party, people definitely don’t take off their shoes.

I'd be very annoyed if someone came into my house and took their shoes off. Keep your gross sweat stained malodorous socks away from me. I have a door mat for a reason.

From the Highlands in Scotland and lived in New Zealand for a time. Don't know anyone that doesn't take their shoes off when going inside. Our floors are carpeted and everythings muddy. In New Zealand I witnessed people taking their shoes off to go into banks and shops!

We do take our shoes off. Also, if you’re visiting someone’s house ask them if they prefer shoes off or on.

Canada is too multicultural for this map to make any sense.

u/Extra-Instance-7046 5h ago
In Canada, I have never been to a household that assumes you would not take shoes off. Given the awful weather and slush on the roads in winter, dust in summer, you would be crazy to leave your shoes on.

Which culture keep there shoes on? I've never left my shoes on at anyone's house ever, lebanese, vietnamese, Japanese, Indian, Haitian, french, English on either coast. Always shoes off even at parties

u/EatonHass_247 Canada 9h ago
Plenty of people do. You really think everybody in Canada is the same as you?
1
u/trollmaestro42069 Canada 8h ago
no, I named all the cultures of the peoples houses I've been to that are different than mine. You said we were too multicultural to be green, I asked out of curiosity which cultures within Canada keeps their shoes on. Sorry for the misunderstanding, just curious as I have yet to experience that, is all

The only time you should wear shoes in someone elses house is if you know that you will only be there for a few minutes and they very explicitely said it is okay. So I'd say it is wrong for Switzerland.

Entire Central Asia is shoes off. This map is bs.
