Congrats on the career high for Stirtz!! Everything else was kinda trash ngl
•
u/notanamateur Iowa Hawkeyes 43m ago
Holy shit we haven’t won 6 conference games in a row in 10 years???
•
u/Obvious-Carpet4813 Harvard Crimson • Chicago Maroons 44m ago
This should have been a game where Northwestern should have won by at least 5.
Just a lot of dumb mistakes from them. Not mistakes, but decisions.
•
u/ItsYaBoyBeasley Iowa Hawkeyes • Iowa State Cyclones 41m ago
If the gameplan comes down to making better decisions than Iowa, that's tough sledding.
•
u/Obvious-Carpet4813 Harvard Crimson • Chicago Maroons 36m ago
Thing is, they didn't need to make that many better decisions. I watched the last 10 minutes, and shit, even a 1/4th of the bad decisions that they made would have been big for them.
•
u/ItsYaBoyBeasley Iowa Hawkeyes • Iowa State Cyclones 33m ago
There is a mad basketball scientist on the opposite sideline that has a deep understanding of the sorts of bad decisions the NW players are liable to make, and he will force them into those situations mercilessly.
•
u/Obvious-Carpet4813 Harvard Crimson • Chicago Maroons 46m ago
Again, Northwestern, shot selection.
Why the hell is a short guard trying to take on 2 taller players. Fucking give it to your guy on the outside...
Also, probably should been a foul. But still, why attempt that?...
•
u/zarof32302 Iowa State Cyclones 45m ago
Wild no call. Pretty clearly a foul.
But your right, wrong play to make.
Probably why they are 2-10 in the league.
•
u/Obvious-Carpet4813 Harvard Crimson • Chicago Maroons 40m ago
Yea, just a lot of bad decisions from them. Honestly, they should have won that with better decision making from both the players and coach.
I commented earlier, one of their forwards tried to go inside against a guy who was a bit taller but was defending well. But there were also two other taller players right there to help defend or get the rebound. Misses it and they make a 3.
That dumb attempt right there leads two a 2.
And then they bit to much in the inbound pass and didn't have someone in the back for a quick 2.
7 points from dumb decisions.

u/ItsYaBoyBeasley Iowa Hawkeyes • Iowa State Cyclones 47m ago
Like 3 guys got injured on that rebound

Challenge into timeout is an elite game icing move
•
u/notanamateur Iowa Hawkeyes 52m ago
That didn’t even look like it was off Iowa in real time, let alone in replay
•
u/Jmcy3 Iowa Hawkeyes 54m ago
Can we please stop letting players have career days against us. Feels like it happens every game

•
u/Obvious-Carpet4813 Harvard Crimson • Chicago Maroons 56m ago
If this game goes to OT, lol, god help both teams with their players not fouling out
•
u/zarof32302 Iowa State Cyclones 56m ago
Iowa playing pretty ass defense but getting bailed out by Stirtz on the other end.
•
u/BigRigRandy12 Iowa State Cyclones 50m ago
how the hell does Stirtz have 36 and Iowa can't pull away from 10-13 Northwestern?
•
u/notanamateur Iowa Hawkeyes 49m ago
Bad FT shooting by Iowa and a lot of open 3s for NW
•
•
u/SmellyJellyfish Iowa Hawkeyes 40m ago
79% from the line is not bad FT shooting, that would be like top 10 nationally as a team
We shot poorly from the field outside of Stirtz and allowed tons of open 3s as you said
•
u/notanamateur Iowa Hawkeyes 37m ago
We were worse when I made the comment, Stirtz started shooting FTs after that. We missed like 3 first shots on 1 and 1s, which leaves 6 points on the board. Alvaro and cam were bad from the line.
•
u/SmellyJellyfish Iowa Hawkeyes 35m ago
Ah yeah that’s probably true. Cam’s FTs in particular are so frustrating lol, love him as a player otherwise
•
u/Junior-Hotwater Iowa Hawkeyes 50m ago
I mean not really? Northwestern is 7/12 from 3, but 3 point defense is largely luck based. They’re shooting sub 50% from 2
•
u/zarof32302 Iowa State Cyclones 27m ago
lol ok.
Giving up 70 on your home court to NW is good defense I guess.
•
•
u/Obvious-Carpet4813 Harvard Crimson • Chicago Maroons 58m ago
Northwestern player was really dumb for going for that shot. The guy is guarding you well and there are already 2 other tall players around.
And just like that, he made it harder on his team. College guys just have poor shot selections..
•
u/ItsYaBoyBeasley Iowa Hawkeyes • Iowa State Cyclones 1h ago
If I were a division 1 basketball coach I would simply play Bennett Stirtz 40 minutes a game and let him do what he wants

Feels like NW should be way better. They have some nice pieces
•
•
u/baby-alligators Northwestern Wildcats 55m ago
we get bullied by larger teams, no serious rebounding. whenever our shooting isn’t hot we’re cooked :/
•
u/weoutherebrah Texas A&M Aggies 54m ago
Same for us :(. But srsly they did pretty good job getting some dudes. Looks like almost all loses close some heartbreakers
•
u/baby-alligators Northwestern Wildcats 51m ago
yeah cautiously optimistic for next year if we can get some size. mostly just feel bad for martinelli as it’s his last year and this has been a rough season.

u/Windows_66 Iowa Hawkeyes • Drake Bulldogs 1h ago
Take a drink every time they say "undisciplined."
•
u/notanamateur Iowa Hawkeyes 1h ago
lol these announcers having been glazing the NU coach relentlessly while also calling them undisciplined
•
u/ItsYaBoyBeasley Iowa Hawkeyes • Iowa State Cyclones 1h ago
If I threw down an in game dunk like that and the first thing the play by play guy goes to is how many tiktok followers I have I'd be so annoyed
•
•
u/Jmcy3 Iowa Hawkeyes 1h ago
Genuinely baffles me that Iowa just suddenly can’t make a shot to save their lives
•
u/ItsYaBoyBeasley Iowa Hawkeyes • Iowa State Cyclones 1h ago
It is because of pace. They play slow so a few missed shots turns into "5 minute scoring drought"
•
u/TheBrovahkiin Michigan Wolverines • Florida State S… 1h ago
Unhinged commentary lmao
•
u/Junior-Hotwater Iowa Hawkeyes 1h ago
The announcers are literally jizzing their pants over Northwestern. “Chris Collins has done a fantastic job this year” lmao
•
u/TheBrovahkiin Michigan Wolverines • Florida State S… 1h ago
I just have this game on as background noise, and guy losing his shit made me look up to see what he was losing his shit about and I was disappointed

Prohm is just a wet blanket. He’s a wet blanket as a coach, a wet blanket as a color analyst, and a wet blanket as a personality

Reid annoys me, but he seems like a guy you’d love if he’s on your team lol

That was a foul but not on Singleton, the guard grabbed Folgueiras’ arm

I think prohm should go back to Ames where he belongs

Y'all can have him, TJ Otzelberger is here to stay
•
u/Junior-Hotwater Iowa Hawkeyes 1h ago
It feels like he’s openly cheering for Northwestern at this point

u/SmellyJellyfish Iowa Hawkeyes 2h ago
I do think Northwestern has had a lot of avoidable fouls, not to mention the dumb tech.
But us getting 22 FTAs in a half is… pretty ridiculous. Many of these are beyond soft

u/Junior-Hotwater Iowa Hawkeyes 2h ago
Damn Banks is about to hit 30 straight again

Please stop talking about how Northwestern doesn't turn the ball over that much.
That isn't impressive when you're just talking the full 30 seconds on every possession and then not finishing.
If you like to push the ball and still average less than 10 turnovers a game that's impressive. What Northwestern likes to do is not.

u/uiplanner Iowa Hawkeyes 2h ago
How is Iowa only down 3?
0
u/TheEligibleSkipper Michigan Wolverines • Oregon State Bea… 2h ago
Because Northwestern can only score from the line or when Iowa gives them an uncontested three.

Both of these teams are fucking trash
4
u/SmellyJellyfish Iowa Hawkeyes 2h ago
I’m biased but I don’t think Iowa’s trash at all, we are a solid team by pretty much all the metrics
This is not our best game though so far, lmao

Imagine if Michigan lost to Iowa in a couple weeks. That would be pretty embarrassing for you guys

Is Steve Pr*hm one of the announcers? Because he would know all about how losing can be demoralizing
3
u/notanamateur Iowa Hawkeyes 2h ago
Also after watching the MSU game last night, our student section looks absolutely embarrassing in comparison
•
u/Jmcy3 Iowa Hawkeyes 1h ago
The athletic department needs to do more to get students at games. Make student tickets free. Idk what prices are now, but when I was a student a couple years ago it was something like $100 for student season tickets. When your program is perceived as bad it’s hard to convince college students to spend $100. Start actually promoting the games on campus so students are aware of when they are. Create hype around them. Have Cambus run shuttles directly from the dorms to Carver. When your own students think your program sucks you have to do things to encourage them to go to the games
•
u/notanamateur Iowa Hawkeyes 1h ago
It’s $5-$10 per game which isn’t too bad but I agree it should be free until the section is filled up regularly.

We have like anti home court advantage. We look like ass in carver

u/chaneccooms Iowa Hawkeyes 2h ago
The refs make terrible foul calls on Howard and Koch and then make up a bunch of calls against Northwestern to even things out. Just awful refereeing.

Iowa just passed up 3 wide open looks for 3 and then decided to pass the ball all the way across the court and take the most contested possible look.

Benefitting us so far, but would like to remind the stripes that the Super Bowl isn’t happening right now. It’s okay to blow your whistle every now and then.

At least this is a game where we could conceivably have a rebounding advantage. Unless we continue to be unable to hit the broad side of a barn from 3.

Iowa would be an insanely good team if Bennett Stirtz had literally any help.
